NCAA Voting on Women's Triathlon as a varsity sport!

Over the past two years, a required number of NCAA institutions submitted letters of commitment endorsing the proposal to create varsity triathlon opportunities for women at the NCAA Division I, II and III levels. This has opened the door for a vote that will take place at the NCAA National Convention on January 15, 2014, in San Diego.

In 1994, the NCAA created the Emerging Sport for Women Program to address low female athletic participation at the NCAA level and generate more opportunities in sports that are proven to be popular with prospective female student-athletes. Inclusion in this program will significantly increase the visibility of triathlon on the national landscape, keep promising athletes in our sport and expand the U.S. Olympic pipeline, and increase exposure for schools that pioneer this effort with us.

The NCAA votes takes place on Jan. 15, and could represent a watershed moment for triathlon in this country.

Institutions that submitted letters of commitment to Triathlon’s NCAA emerging sport initiative are: (However, these schools are not bound to add the sport, once approved.)
  • Adams State University
  • The U.S. Air Force Academy
  • University of Arizona
  • University of Colorado at Colorado Springs
  • University of Denver
  • Drake University
  • Maine-Farmington
  • Marymount University, Arlington, VA
  • Monmouth University
  • University of North Carolina Asheville
  • Northern Iowa
  • Stanford University

Pending the NCAA membership votes in January of 2014, NCAA varsity programs could be established and competing as early as August 1, 2014.

The proposed structure of an NCAA triathlon team is as follows;
  • Draft-legal (Varsity): 5 athletes
  • Non-Drafting (Novice): 5-7 athletes- developmental squad used to prepare athletes appropriately for draft legal style racing – the key here is for these athletes to gain the experience needed for draft legal competitions and over time, elevate them to a higher status as skill sets are advanced.
Women’s triathlon at the NCAA level would start with 3.5 scholarships with the planned growth of additional scholarships over a three-year period. 6.5 Equivalency scholarships per institution would be the total number of available scholarships based on the final structure of the sport. Note that triathlon in the early stages would not be broken down into divisions – it would be one grouping for all those teams that support a program. Offering scholarships is not a requirement but certainly the biggest tool an institution can use to attract talent. Also, no scholarships = no Title IX financial contribution for that school.

NCAA triathlon is proposed as a fall sport with competitions taking place between September through the beginning of November.

The proposed competition structure is extremely flexible:
  • Open Water Swim Options: Swim: .5km-.6km / Bike: 15km-20km / Run: 3km-5km
  • Pool Swim Options: (Team Invitational Event accommodating 2-4 Draft Legal Teams): Swim: .4km -.6km (two athletes per lane) / Bike: 15km-20km / Run: 4km-6km
  • Mixed Team Relay Event (2-16 Teams): Each member of the four-person relay team completes a full swim/bike/run: Swim: 200m - 300m / Bike: 7km - 10km / Run: 1.5km - 2km
  • NCAA National Championship Event: Swim: .5km-.6km / Bike: 15km-20km / Run: 3km-5km
The Olympic format of triathlon allows for drafting to be done in each phase of the event. Standard triathlon allows for drafting to occur in two of the disciplines – the swim and run – but not on the bike. The format that we will be supporting here is draft legal racing in all three disciplines (further explanation below).

Varsity races would incorporate the draft-legal format utilized by the International Triathlon Union and in the Olympic Games (for varsity races only). Team scoring, similar to cross country scoring, would be used to value the performance of all members of a team. This style of racing emphasizes team tactics, particularly on the bike, and is spectator friendly. Courses will feature multiple loops (on the swim, bike and the run) allowing fans to easily follow the drama of the event.

Novice races will be conducted separately from the varsity races. They will be conducted using a hybrid of draft legal rules (only drafting tactics allowed with a teammate), and will institute draft legal bike restrictions for safety and development purposes. Organizers believe this is an appropriate, controlled, safe way to prepare novice triathletes for progression to varsity competition.

NCAA institutions taking advantage of the unique event structure that triathlon has to offer as they showcase exciting varsity, draft legal races as well as integrating race opportunities for their communities.

Costs vary based on the individual and level of sponsorship acquired but a rough overview would be to take the cross country budget line items for student athletes and add the non-traditional equipment such as wetsuit, bike shoes, bike helmet and bike case (optional). Purchasing a bike would be an institutional decision as many triathletes already have a bike suited for draft legal competitions. There COULD be some considerations for some budget money for simple bike upgrades.

The reason for having triathlon as a fall sport is primarily for weather and water temperature concerns but there are a few other reasons:
  1. Student-athletes have a better chance coming into the fall season in shape from a summer of training and competition than they do in February from the holiday season and winter training. In the fall, they are prepared for competitions and practices can be more efficient and time appropriate with focus on tactics, strategy, and skills, compared to a spring sport scenario where water temps are not conducive to open water swimming until April for most schools in the northern part of the country. This means more time would be spent on fitness and less on concerns about weather. Also, with graduations being held in May, an April championship would press most student-athletes for time.
  2. A fall season allows schools in the north to host a regular season event in an open water venue because of warmer waters from the summer and wetsuits. September and October are better options than February and March in most regions of the country. Therefore, we conclude that the fall will allow us to be more inclusive with the sport and an attractive varsity option for more schools.
Benefits of Supporting a Varsity NCAA Triathlon Program
  • Create athletic opportunities that are popular with females
  • At the 2013 USA Triathlon Collegiate National Championships
  • 1015 triathletes qualified and contended for a national championship
  • 404 of them were Females making up 40% of the participants
  • Triathletes are not swimmers. They are not bikers. They are not runners. They are Triathletes.
  • An Olympic sport with broad national participation
  • USA Triathlon has held Collegiate National Championships since 1992
  • Currently more than 160 collegiate clubs are registered with USAT on campuses nationwide, in each of the continental states
  • If an institution OR community has a pool and a track, facility costs associated with a triathlon program are low, manageable and sustainable compared to other non-revenue championship sports.
  • Equipment restrictions will be put in place to reduce the overall cost to outfit a squad while also increasing safety.
  • Hosting a Triathlon Event consisting of a collegiate/community sprint, followed by the featured varsity women’s draft legal race, is a model that most RDs can support with the right mix of roads and water. The design is intended to generate funds for an athletic program through community participant registration fees and event sponsorships. Participation numbers for local triathlons traditionally range from 250-750 participants with registration fees of $50 - $75 per participant.
  • Triathlon can create attractive fundraising opportunities with donors who participate in, or simply enjoy, the sport.
The sport is comprised of 2.2 million people who are not only passionate about triathlon but support a $126,000 average annual family income.

Triathletes are also highly educated with nearly 80% having at least a college degree.

Many have placed the international appeal of triathlon equal to golf and tennis (some call it the new, “golf” in that it keeps people coming back with interest in improving their “score/time”).

Ironman triathletes, learn a lesson from Basketball star Hank Gathers

Through the years, I've learned the importance of taking care of yourself through exercise.  But, just because you are looking and feeling great doesn't mean you won't have complications or surprises lurking in the shadows.

With my road to Ironman Chattanooga 2014 traveling with Ride to Give and Mended Little Hearts, I have made pit stops along the way enlightening me that heart disease and complications aren't just for those that are out of shape or don't treat their bodies right.

It hit home watching a recent ESPN 30 for 30 about Hank Gathers.  He played college basketball and had a promising career in the NBA waiting for him, but a heart-muscle disorder, hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, eventually lead to his death.

His death might have been avoided had he not played at LMU with their run and gun style of fast break play.  The practices were intense and the games were non-stop running.  He initially passed out in a game from exercise-induced ventricular tachycardia, was prescribed medication that affected his athletic performance, speculated to have cut the dose to play better and then died during a game.

Could he have played with the medication and accepted a lesser athletic performance?  Could he have played in medication and not been at risk for a sudden death?  Should he have listened better to his doctors?  Theirs a lot of sepculation around his death and lawsuits to go with them, but the moral of the story is that for anyone putting their bodies through intense physical work loads, like Ironman Triathletes, it's a wise move to stay on top of your heart health.

You may have underlying conditions that under normal circumstances may not effect your life, but riding and running for hours on end and training for 20 hours a week could cause exercise-induced ventricular tachycardia.  The very training that may make you look and feel invincible may be killing you without you even knowing it.

Word to the wise, check with your doctor, get an EKG to at least have a baseline if nothing is detected.  You owe it to yourself and your loved ones to make sure you know your body.  Mine is scheduled this December.  Get with the program.  :)

Check out the 30 for 30 video.  It's almost an hour, but very interesting.

Prayers for Triston t-shirts from Bigfish Screen Printing

For those of you following along...

I'm on board for $5000 for Ride to Give and Mended Little Hearts in conjunction with racing Ironman Chattanooga 2014 (www.Tri4aHandUp.com).

We're at about $300 and the $5000 needs to be reached by September 28, 2014, which is race day.  So, we are making progress and it may be tough sledding right now while the holidays are coming up and funds may go to Christmas shopping.

BUT, what better way to hit two birds with one stone than to get in on a shirt made by Bigfish Screen Printing for a St. Louis family that has a small son with severe pulmonary hypertension and pulmonary vein stenosis.  Great gift for yourself or someone else and helping out a great cause at the same time!

Our son was born with pulmonary hypertension, but he was treated with breathing treatments and that got him out of the woods.  Unfortunately Triston Walls needed several surgeries to make it to today and is looking at needing perhaps a lung transplant in the future.

Buying the $10 shirt affords Bigfish to contribute funds back to the Walls to help with medical and travel expenses and supports the mission of Mended Little Hearts!

From Triston's Facebook page:

"BigFish Screenprinting has designed a t-shirt just for Triston (they also did this fundraiser for Caleb…who got to go home today after a heart transplant and 5 months in the hospital!). This company is amazing because they keep no profits whatsoever for themselves. They will all go to Triston (about $6 for every t-shirt).

To me…the design is absolutely perfect. Here are the designer’s thoughts around the design and the verse they used. “The double lung transplant being depicted as tree roots and at the very top…God’s heart. Relating back to the verse, the good and perfect gift (lungs) comes from above (God’s heart).” I love it.

Follow the link below if you would like to order. The shirts are only $10. There is an option to pick up in St. Louis or Kansas City which will be at a Mended Little Hearts Meeting. We will give you those dates later. Or you can pay to have them shipped to you. If someone wants to volunteer to be the pickup location in Ste. Genevieve…I will be happy to bring all of these back from the meeting to save you all shipping. However I can’t have everyone come to our house because Triston’s new medicine is an immunosuppressant.

Also please share. With what is looming in Triston's future...it will all go to good use.

Thanks you BigFish and Emily Falkenrath who helped put this all together!! And thanks in advance to all those that order!!"

Funds go directly to the Walls family from Bigfish.

Nuttzo natural nut butter review

Mass production of processed food is in full swing in this day and age of the “your way, right away” mentality of instant society. In this fast paced world we live in, everyone is looking to squeeze the most out of every hour of every day and no one is particularly fond of spending inordinate amounts of time preparing nutritional and natural meals.

The stats have to top 95% of all people that have at least partaken in a fast food run to save time for a meal. McDonalds, Wendy’s, Burger King, Subway and the list goes on of all the available places to get a quick bite and get on with your daily routine. There’s no judgement here. We’ve all done it. Some indulge more than others, but it’s almost unavoidable to utilize fast food for a busy day.

What can we do? We can control what we have at home for quick easy meal prep. Not all meals have to a fine-china hours on end type of affair to prepare. There are several natural and more healthy items out there to choose from to stock your cabinets with. The key is to be prepared and that’s why we’re here with this review.

Nuttzo nut butter (https://gonuttzo.com/) sports a natural alternative to overly-processed peanut butter that adorns so many of our shelves. Peanut butter in moderation is a great alternative for a quick meal or snack. And then there’s the people that are addicted to peanut butter and could have it every meal. Yes, please. But, what’s going to happen when you turn to the less natural, more processed alternatives of peanut butter on a regular basis? Well, when you throw in sugar, hydrogenated vegetable oils and soybean and rapeseed to prevent separation, you get ingredients that are not benefiting your body much at all. You want to capture the positive aspects of peanut butter and that’s what Nuttzo wants to do.

Read on below for our review of Nuttzo to find out if you can have your natural nut butter and like it, too.

Packaging / Shelf Appeal / Marketing

Aw man, they printed the label up-side-down. Yes, they did, but on purpose. It catches your attention right off the bat and we thought we had received a bunk printing job, but that’s one of their “gotchas” to get your attention.

The graphics and printing of Nuttzo appeals to the child in all of us crusty adults that sometimes take life too seriously. They promote fun, color and energy with their packaging.

They are active on Facebook and Twitter, a must for any brand looking for traction in this digital day and age. They reply to comments and interact with their consumer base instead of housing a robotic existence in social media.

Form / Construction

There’s something to be said in the details. In addition to touting a natural nut butter, Nuttzo brags that their “Jars are PET BPA-free plastic. Lighter and stronger. So you save on shipping, and we reduce breakage. 100% Recyclable.” Putting their money where their mouths are, Nuttzo is covering all of the tree-hugging bases, if you are monitoring that type of thing.

When you break down the nut butter and bolts of their product, they list 100% Organic Ingredients of peanuts, cashews, almonds, brazilian nuts, sunflower seeds, flax seeds, hazelnuts, and sea salt. No vegetable oils or additives to keep the butter from separating. Yes, you may see the oils separate from the butter when you get your Nuttzo home, but simply stir it together and no problem. What you spend in 2 minutes stirring could save you 2 hours in aerobic exercise to burn off additives.

The product from jar, label and to the nut butter is professional in appearance and could match any manufacturer in quality and stature. Placed on a shelf next to the big boys of peanut butter, Nuttzo could stand toe to toe, but up-side-down.

They also have choices. You can get original nut butter, peanut free (contains other types of nuts) or chocolate in creamy or crunchy. Pick what tickles your fancy.

Fashion / Appearance

When you break into your Nuttzo jar, you may or may not have to stir the oil and butter together, but that’s about as much work as you need to do. The rest of your effort consists of grabbing a spoonful or knife full of nut butter and spreading it on your confection of choice.

Bread, bagels, rice cakes or tortilla shell will take your Nuttzo butter with ease. Depending on smooth or chunky style, Nuttzo spreads uniformly or stays on your utensil long enough to lick it off. It looks appealing, although different than the typical regular peanut butter products. You will see the specks of different colors that look like spice flakes mixed in the butter, but are from all seven of the different nuts mixed in.

Fit / Function

So, it may seem more healthy and works like regular peanut butter, but how does it taste?

Yes, natural nut butter is a different taste than your usual processed peanut butters. It takes a little getting used to going from sugars and vegetable oils to nuts only with sea salt. It won’t be as sweet and you may actually need a few meals to get used to it, but have faith that your taste buds will come around and you won’t remember what you are missing from the sugar loaded regulars.

We tried it in oatmeal, protein shakes, PB&J sandwiches, on bagels, bread, tortilla shells, with and without jelly and pretty much any way you can eat nut butter. It was filling and served the same nutritional requirements that we demanded from our processed peanut butters, but without some of the crud.

It’s amusing when you stop to think that the healthy items we eat may actually not be as exciting taste wise, but the reason is the natural existence of products are not jammed with sugar to make you crave it. There’s a reason why lab rats are more addicted to oreo cookies than crack cocaine.

Cost

Depending on your style, you could get Nuttzo direct from their site from $12.99 to $19.99 for a 16 ounce jar. You can also buy in stores locally or get a deal ordering in bulk from their site. You can get the regular peanut butter from $4 and up, but you get what you pay for. You are getting a discount for the mass production of a food product with additives to make it last longer on the shelves and be more visually appealing, not necessarily to make it more healthy.

We’re not judging. If you like your skippy or jiff, and they have “natural” versions, by all means go for it. Just check the labels. True natural nut butter will only contain nuts and salt, that’s it. Anything else is not for the benefit of your health.

Final thoughts

Nuttzo is a great option for those of us triathletes addicted to peanut butter as it’s a very quick and accessible source of appetite quenching and training nutrition. Too much processed peanut butter can contribute to an unhealthy serving of sugar and hydrogenated vegetable oil. Nuttzo is peanuts and sea salt, period. Simple and effective. You can’t pig out on it, but after you get accustomed to the taste of natural nut butter, you will never look back and can rest easy that you are satisfying those ridiculous requirements of your training diet at the peak of your ironman training. Quick, nutritious and a great energy source.

2014 Ironman Chattanooga training, sort of...

So, after declaring myself recovered from the KC marathon, I suppose you could call this the start of IM Choo training...

Last week was a good week of "training".  I put that in quotations in regards to the fact the swimming, biking, running and strength training I'm doing is more along the lines of for fun more than with a goal in mind for each workout.  In the off season, I try and mentally recuperate by not stressing about workout goals and just focus on getting some good miles in and enjoying the fall weather.

I'm leaning more bike heavy to capitalize on the bike friendly weather before it gets too cold in these parts and forces my indoors on to the trainer.  I hate being cold and I hate not being able to feel my toes.

At this point, I feel strong and recovered enough that I can go out for a 2 hour ride or 1 hour run without worry of over-training or doing damage too close to completing a big event.  It's pretty much fair game on any kind of workout and locking back down on a pattern of training. Which, I'm still adjusting to daylight savings shift and I'm feeling all wacky from that, if you can get wacky from an hour shift.

But, it's hard this far out from IM Choo with the base from last year to feel like I'm embarking on anything abnormally different than a regular off season training load.  It's nothing too taxing and it won't get very interesting as far as intensity and volume for a few months.  Just trying to maintain a level of fitness to be able to hit the workouts hard when it comes time to buckle down.  Kind of like studying on summer break to stay sharp for classes that start in the fall, as twisted as that may sound.

Here's a look at last week's "fun" training week:
SWIMMING : 1.14 miles
BIKING : 87 miles
RUNNING : 15 miles
STRENGTH : 1 hour
TOTAL TIME : 10:08
TOTAL MILES : 106 miles

Hope everyone had a fun Halloween and stay trained, my friends.
