@BondiBand review and giveaway!

It’s hot.  Almost d@mn hot!  As we approach July and the heat of the summer for most us in the States, you can’t avoid the heat.  Even at 4am, some places are already 80 degrees and 80% humidity.  There’s nothing wrong with a sweat fest workout in the heat, as long as you are prepared.

Sure, you need hydration, sunscreen and eye protection, but what about those rivers of sweat pouring down your face?  Most of us have been there.  Running or riding along (usually isn’t as much of a problem in the pool) and you have to use your jersey or shirt to constantly wipe your face and eyes.  Sometimes it stings your eyes, and other times is covers your sunglasses making it hard to see where you are going.

Helmets come with that padding that seems to absorb the sweat, only to release it by the bucket full when you look up or adjust your helmet.  Ever have helmet pad stew pour down your face and over your mouth?  To say it tastes kind of salty and just plain nasty is an understatement.
Personally, I sweat more than the average human (I would guess, not documented).  Easily 7 to 8 pounds can escape my body in the form of perspiration and that’s with accounting for fluid intake.  If they came out with a windshield wiper system for sunglasses and an automatic towel system for running, they would have my money.

But, that’s not really an option (or is it?).  What I needed was a better system than hats and having to stop every 10 miles on the bike to clean off my glasses.

That’s when I ran into Bondi Band.  From their website,” Check out our wicking fabric bands; they will absorb and evaporate buckets of sweat.”  Buckets of sweat, sounds like a winner.
After trying out the Triathlete Bondi Band for some riding and running, here’s my take on the application of the products for the everyday triathlete in the heat.

After poking around on the site, they have a nice selection with different logos and phrases.  They have around 5 to 6 triathlon related head bands.  Finding something that fits your taste shouldn’t be an issue.  But, more than likely it will have to be black unless you want to make a special order.

It was an odd feeling wearing one the first time out.  I wore it while riding under my helmet and you immediately notice it adds a factor of warmth to your skull.  It cuts off some ventilation within the helmet and unless you are moving, it can feel like it makes you a little warmer.  Once the sweat started pouring out, I knew my bucket of sweat may have exceeded their idea of a bucket of sweat.  Out in 95 degrees with 80% humidity, I was sweating like a (insert your off-color comparison here).  I was in serious doubt about the product after getting 10 miles down the road and it’s dripping sweat.  BUT, what was different was where it was coming out.  It was no longer flowing freely down my sunglasses, but rather coming from the sides of my brows flowing down my cheeks.  My glasses were free from vision impairing bodily fluids, even though I was still off-loading perspiration and an exponential rate.  It worked to an extent and solved my basic problem of sweat in my eyes and on my sunglasses.  After the ride, ringing out the Bondi band produced around a fourth of a cup of sweat.  Sweat is better in the band than in my helmet pads pouring down my face.

Running with Bondi band is a similar situation.  Still have some sweat escaping the band, but it was redirect to the sides of the face away from the eyeballs and sunglasses.  What’s nice while running, if you are the type that likes hats or visors while running, this is a good additional to the arsenal that’s lighter and serves a purpose besides fashion.

I even wore Bondi band to the gym for some strength training.  Who wants to do their hair before the gym?  Bedhead rules and when you have small children, it’s all you can do to get out of the door to get to the gym and get a quality lift in.  Bondi band was a good solution to hide unruly hair-do’s without looking toolish or foolish.  You might get some looks while people read them.  You might even be considered elitist for wearing it, but if you wear your triathlete heritage on your sleeve, it’s time to advertise.

Overall the Bondi Band concept might appear to be more style than function, for men.  For women, it’s a great tool just to keep hair out your of your face if anything.  But, the function for men comes in the capabilities to keep sweat redirected away from your eyes and blurring your vision.
What’s also nice is the price.  At $8, it’s around $10 less than your average running visor and provides similar function.  They’re washable and don’t have a cardboard bill that could deteriorate with multiple washes.

Consider Bondi Band for your sweat relief needs.

If you have read this far, then you have a chance to win the TRI Bondi band!  And no, I didn't use it.

Last week by the training numbers

Last week was a build week and this week will be the peak as I prep for the Midwest Mayhem long course triathlon, part of the Midwest Triathlon Series.  It's a low key local tri series that has low entry fees while they opt to not do race medals and a few other features to keep the cost down.

Quantity of junk you get at the race (that you eventually end of trashing) is down while Quality of the event is high.

Last week's numbers...
BIKING - 78.85 miles
SWIMMING - 5600 yards - wanted more time in the pool, but I will take it.
RUNNING - 17 miles - wanted one more running workout, but I will take it as well.
TOTAL MILES - 99.25
TOTAL TIMES - 10:04 - not too shabby

JCC Youth Triathlon Race Recap - 6/24/12

It wasn't me this time racing, it was the 4 year old!
Riah had always said she wanted to race like daddy does, so we found the JCC Youth Triathlon that had a division for 5 and under!

It was more laid back than the older kids' race and the parents could help out and be on the course.

It was odd worrying about her racing and not me...
Usually I'm busy getting my hydration and gear ready before heading to the race, but this time I was packing a 4T pink swim suit, kid's water socks and a toddler bike with training wheels.  No, I don't usually ride a pink bike with training wheels, but I can if I need to.

The big kids started at 7am, the young kids were suppose to start at 7:45am.  We showed up with kids fed, bike and helmet ready at 7:20am to get her signed in and ready.

Sadly, the were running SEVERELY behind.  Riah's group didn't start until 9:30am.  Now, for those of you with a 4 and a 1 year old, you know that time is of the essence.  They got up early, they were hungry and it was getting hot.  We planned to be done by 8am.  We didn't get done until 10am.  That sucked with a very grumpy 1 year old that wanted to play in the water (but could not since it was closed for the event) and a 4 year old not understanding why she didn't get to race yet.

We just about left when they FINALLY started lining them up.

Riah went to the "water-run" group since she's not 100% on swimming yet.  She water walked two laps in the wading pool.  Hit the bike course and rode 0.75 miles.  Hit the run and ran 0.25 miles.

The sweet part was that she didn't stop and get tired of it.  She's had moments in the past where she would get bored with something and want to stop.  But, she was a trooper and ran to the turnarounds without me having to be by her side the entire time.

She got confused on the course at one point, but after a quick redirection, she was back at it.

After the race she was awarded her little medal and a cup of water.  She was very proud of herself and declared, "I was first!".

Good form.  Very little heal strike.  ;)
Now, since there was no chip timing and it was a time trial start, there's not denying or confirming her claim about first place.  We did inform her that right now it didn't really matter.  When she gets older, it might matter more, but it was more important that she finished.

The race was a blast...
But the race was only 10 minutes of the 4 plus hours to get there and wait to get started.  I wish there was a way that we could have kept tabs on the start time for the Tots.  They were way off on start times and I'm not sure that was because of poor planning or just unforeseen circumstances.

In retrospect we should have dropped off the 1 year old or had someone come and watch him so he could get his sleep and we could have two parents to keep track of a 4 year old that was getting more and more testy as the time went by.

The event was a good event for youth.  They had their top game going for the older kids, but the Tots race was a mild cluster F.  I wasn't sure where to drop her little bike off at.  I didn't see anything about what her race course would look like.  It wasn't a huge issue since it wasn't that much distance, but it would have been good for picture locations and staging spectators.

I'm not sure if we will try and find another one this year, but it may be something we try after a year of recovery.  It also depends on how much the kiddo pushes to do another one.

You have to be happy when the kid enjoys the activity...
She seemed to genuinely enjoy the race.  It was all she could talk about and very proud to show her medal off.  She was also fixated on being first.  Something we have to keep in check to keep the ego down and grace up.  ;)

She was very much looking forward to it the entire week leading up to it.  You have to be happy when you invest that much time and effort into an event for your kid and they actually enjoy it!  So often we parents get wrapped up in providing activity choices for our kids only to have the kid no like it.

Who knows, maybe triathlons will become a part of her interests, but for now it was just fun to watch her run around.

Welcome to the gun show and our numbers on our arm.

Review of Zippfizz from @Zippfizzcorp

The sports drink market is booming these days.  With Gatorade making a 3 step drink series to prime, energize and recover, Powerade, and Powerbar Perform, who knows what they should be drinking while working out or competing in events.

GU, Hammer Nutrition and Push Endurance make powders that mix with water that supplies you with essential vitamins, electrolytes and calories to keep you going through long and hot days on the roads.

A new kid on the block is Zipfizz – www.Zippfizz.com.

From their site, “Zipfizz is an all-natural, great tasting energy drink-mix powder that delivers a powerful charge of micronutrients to the body's fuel system. It contains no ephedra or other artificial stimulants. Most people experience an immediate, revitalizing burst of energy after taking Zipfizz.
Zipfizz is healthy energy in a tube! Give your body a rush of vitamins, minerals and key amino acids to protect the immune system. Zipfizz has created an advanced formula that provides a significant amount of vitamins, fewer calories, lower carbohydrates, superior taste, variety and unique packaging! Simply put, it's different because it's good for you!

Use Zipfizz as a morning or afternoon pick-me-up, or enhance your training by taking it before, during, or after a hard workout. Because Zipfizz contains no sugar, users will experience an
increased energy level for up to 4 - 6 hours without the sudden "crash" associated with other energy drinks.”

They have shown up at events such as Ironman Kansas 70.3 triathlon and more.  Zippfizz has reached out to the Kansas City Endurance Sports Examiner for a review of their drink mix.

Using them for hydration during running and cycling, here are a few pros and cons of Zippfizz.

It’s advertised more as a stable energy drink mix more than a source of substantial hydration.  True, you will get a good dose of electrolytes, but with only 10 calories, it would not be a good source of substance to replenish your reserves during long distance endurance training or racing.  You would need something else to add in calories.

It’s nice that they come in small containers so you’re not wasting so much plastic.  All other sports drinks and energy drinks seem to come in oversized containers that do nothing but fill up landfills when you’re left with the empty drink container.

It’s a little bit of a hybrid drink.  It crosses over for sports drinks, energy drinks and immune system boosting drinks like Emergency or Airborne.  You get some benefit in each category instead of looking for multiple solutions to multiple issues.

It does have caffeine.  You will need to plan around workouts in the evenings if you intend to hit the sack at a decent hour.  It’s nice for morning workouts as the caffeine is at 100 mgs from green tea and guarana.  It provides the caffeine alertness without the peaks and valleys and crash at the end of the ride.

When you mix it up, it does taste a little watered down if you use too big of a container.  That’s one pitfall that stands out.  Most drink mixes fall into this category, though.  Using the recommended doses result in drinks that aren’t as tasteful as the pre-manufactured drinks.  But, those pre-manufactured drinks contain a lot more junk to make them that way, so it’s a tradeoff.

There’s no measuring and pouring from an awkward scoop into a sports drink bottle.  Some bottles with small openings cause issues with spilling drink mix and it’s all subject to interpretation.  Add a little, the scoop could be overflowing, etc.  With Zippfizz, you just open the tube and pour it in.  No guessing.  No thinking at 5 A.M.  about how much to add.

Overall Zippfizz has its place.  It may not be as suitable for a sports drink on a long distance endurance training day or race, but it’s a nice substitute for your morning pick-me-up coffee or caffeinated soda.  It’s always better to drink some water than pre-manufactured pop.  For those that can’t stomach your daily recommended amount of water without some flavor, Zippfizz is your answer, just watch out around bedtime.

2013 Ironman Lake Tahoe, signed up, oh my

The event was announced, registration opened, and it promptly sold out in 1 day...
I had to work fast.
  1. Would the logistics work?  Family, money, time and work... all big considerations for signing up for 140.6 miles in Lake Tahoe in September 2013.
    1. Family - since it is September of 2013, that gives us 15 months to get ready for the impact to the family schedule.  My goal it to get workouts in the morning before work, over lunch and small ones here and there after work taking the kids to the gym daycare.  I'm trying to minimize the impact to the after work routine to still spend time with the family and not become a stranger.
    2. Money - I had to pay race entry Monday.  It was manageable right now and we have time to save up for lodging and travel.  My goal is to merge it with a family trip the week after to enjoy Lake Tahoe.  Not sure about driving or flying.  Driving we will have more freedom to come and go, but with two young kids, I'm not sure how a drive from Kansas City to Lake Tahoe would work out.
    3. Time - My goal is to keep it under 20 hours at peak for training.  It's like a part time job... so the blog and writing may take a back seat reducing to a few posts here and there.  Sorry, you guys get to suffer without my inspirational writing.  ;)
    4. Work - with the switch to a sales job, I have more flexibility.  I may have a lunch meeting, but I can hit the nearest 24 hour fitness afterwards.  My phone calls and email come to my phone and I have a laptop.  Starbucks makes a nice office no matter where you are.  It should be workable.
So with all of those considerations and like I said, 15 months to get it all in order, it should be manageable.  Not to say there won't be some speed bumps, but that's all a part of the experience, right?

Stay tuned also if you are heading to the race, I'm hoping to get some intell on the area and deals that they general public may not be aware of.

Let the insanity begin!

The week that was in triathlon training

Mostly, last week was spent recovering from IM KS.
I was a little run down Monday after IM KS 70.3.  Picked the training back up with a pool swim Tuesday to ease back into it and back to "normal" by the weekend.

The only real issue is the sinus infection I've got going on left over from my cold two weeks ago.  Need to hit the Dr for some antibiotics.  Good times.

Lets look at the numbers...
BIKING -55.5 miles.  Would have liked a little more, but I was pressed for time and had to cut a few short.
SWIMMING - 6670 yards all in two swims
RUNNING - 12 miles.  I wanted to take an easy on the legs last week, so just an 8 mile run Saturday and a tempo 4 miler on Tuesday.
TOTAL MILES - 71.6 miles
TOTAL TIME - 07:51

Behind the numbers...
Recovery is an important part of the endurance racing experience.  If you don't take the time to rest and recover properly and just jump right back into a full load, you're asking for trouble.

You'll either injure yourself or make yourself nice and sick (sinus infections aside since that's a virus).

Or, you will never reach a peak in performance because your body is in a constant state of over-trained and in need of recovery.

So, enjoy the down time!  Sleep in for a week!  Refresh when you can.

How I enjoyed Sunday...
Someone had so much fun Sunday for Father's Day, he just didn't want to leave my side watching a movie waaaaaay past his bedtime.

Hopefully have some important news to share after 2pm today!

2012 Ironman Kansas 70.3 race report on Endurance Hour Podcast!

Check it out, I made the cut for Endurance Hour podcast for my suffering at IM KS 70.3.  Sadly the audio from my phone wasn't the best, but you take what you can get!

Check it out - http://www.swimbikerunvideos.com/endurance-hour-25-boise/

From IM KS athlete check in, I stopped by my good friends at Skin Strong at their booth and they had some guest commercial peformers.... good stuff!

Now check out me trying to muddle my way through the past 3 to 4 miles at the last turn-around aid station. It was mile 9ish. I could have swore I aknowledged my wife when she talked to me, but clearly from the video, I did not. Oops.

More amazing Ironman Kansas 70.3 pictures

To document the suffering, my wife took a couple pictures of me at IM KS.  I don't think there was one picture of me looking like I was enjoying my time out there even though I chose to train and torture myself running this triathlon.

You think I'd be livin' up every minute with a big ole Chrissie Wellington smile.  Not so much.

Enjoy

Can you see me flailing in the men 35-39 swim start?

Actually started feeling better leaving T1.

Still queasy, but feeling much better after escaping the choppy water.  Bike leg was probably the best part of my race day, even with the winds.
Sure, everyone feels a little peppy after T2.  Shuffling along at 8:30 pace!

Legging it out... this was lap 1.  Lap 2 was a little less energetic.

Is he barfing?  Getting IV fluids?  No.  Volunteer dousing my back with water as I'm resting and finding the energy to get out of the finish area.
