Did you know Chrissie Wellington wrote a book?

You know Chrissie, right?

Chrissie Wellington is one of the greatest Ironman triathletes to ever race the Ironman World Championships in Kona.  Chrissie Wellington, a 4X Ironman World Champion has never lost an Ironman triathlon in her life. But perhaps more importantly she holds every significant Ironman World record including the World Championship course record. There can be no doubt that Chrissie Wellington is the fastest living female Ironman competitor.

After a hard Saturday of building a deck at my house and a Sunday morning at the 5150 Kansas City Triathlon, I settled in a delirious coma Sunday afternoon when the kids went down for a nap. I sat on the couch, unable to move or think coherently. What else would you watch but the 2011 airing of the Ironman World Championships on DVR? As I zoned out to watching people exert more effort than I did for the morning, I couldn’t help but watch Chrissie Wellington overcome her injures to win Kona again and view her in a different light.

Mirinda Carfrae called her a tenacious competitor. All the female pros had their cameos during the race going on and on about how intimidating Chrissie is and how can anyone beat her?

True. Chrissie showed up with road rash and a few other injuries that she let on about, but after you read her book, “A Life Without Limits”, you see her in a completely different light and realize she had more than road rash and some minor injuries to content with in 2011.

In the initial chapters, Chrissie explains about getting the nickname “Muppet” for doing the wrong things at the wrong time and her tendencies to injure herself. You find out about her eating issues, body image issues and growing up trying to take advantage of everything life has to offer.

Simply put, you don’t think of Chrissie Wellington as the Ironman terminator after reading her book. You see her as a real person that through life circumstances, found her way into triathlon.

Through reading the book, I personally do not view her as a win-hungry triathlete that will destroy herself to smash her competition. Chrissie comes across as a competitive and compassionate athlete, but grew up in the pro ranks in a very short amount of time. She now plays the head games well, but by no means is she out to destroy people. She’s out to be the best triathlete she can be held to her own standards and expectations. Usually that effort involves her winning a few races.

It’s a very telling book about how she came into triathlon and how she ascended to the top with some controversy and natural abilities. From her first “coach” at her local multisport club to her now Coach Dave Scott, you see how she has become the seemingly invincible athlete she is today and who influenced her the most.

You won’t get the gritty little details on her training plans. There is a chapter dedicated to her general training regiments, but you won’t get the secret training plans to her success. It’s more of a biography than a training manual. Besides, most of us can’t afford to leave our lives as they are to “train” in Nepal to get a substantial endurance base before competing in triathlons.

You will find out what goes through her mind at her big events and more insight into her love life than you thought was there. Once you start to understand the language barrier from English spoken in the US to English spoken in the UK, the book begins to flow and it’s hard to put it down.

Overall it was an entertaining read and a great window into what makes Chrissie Wellington. You find out more background details than forums, blogs, gossip articles and IM coverage can offer. It reads as an unfiltered look into a life that so many have made a mystery or made up their own versions of the truth. You find out she’s genuine when she stands at the finish line to hand out medals (as she did at Ironman Kansas 70.3 that I saw her in person 2 times – the race made the book!) It’s not just for looks to gain favor with the age groupers. She really cares.

It’s a very worthwhile read.

*Writer’s note, the publisher sent a complimentary copy of the book to read and review. They in no way influenced this review.

inner peace... inner peace...

It's like Master Shifu trying to find inner peace with Po...

You must become one with your inner being to be at peace with your decision to ride a bike on the roads with idiots...

 Inner peace...

Strike 1 (actually 2, but I omitted another moron motorist story that happened a few weeks ago) was last week when I watched a cyclists get harassed by a driver for no apparent reason other than the over weight driver of a very ugly old Honda accord was just having a bad hair day.

He thought it appropriate to stop, yell and flip off the cyclists for making him wait an extra 5 seconds to pass.  The nerve...

Inner peace...

Strike 2 was yesterday over lunch riding hill repeats on a nasty little 8% incline 4 miles from my house.  Nice quiet little road that's in decent condition and a small connector road to major streets, but not as well known.

As I rode up the hill for the 5th time, an older retired looking gentlemen slowed down to pass, matching my speed to roll down his window and inform me, "that's what sidewalks are for", and sped off.

Putz.

Inner peace...

Dude, sidewalks are for pedestrians. It was a sidewalk, not a bike path.  It was in a sad state of repair and there were people walking on it.  Get a clue.  I'm sorry if I disrupted your day by forcing you to slow down and inform me of the existence of the sidewalk, but that's life.

Inner peace...

Really people?  Are we a society in that much of a hurry or that adverse to others getting some exercise in that we feel the need to police the roads from cyclists that actually obey the traffic rules?

Am I alone in the expectation that we could all get along out there?

Inner peace...

Last week by the numbers and using @BRDSports brace

Last week was a lot of house chores and some training...
It's official, we are looking to dump our house on the bloated housing market.

1. Getting your house ready after being in it for 10 years sucks.
2. I wish I would have kept my deck in better condition.  I'm still wiped out from repairing it.
3. I'm not looking forward to moving furniture for carpet replacement.
4. I'm not looking forward to paying for house painting and carpet replacement.
5. Here's a tip I will take into the new house.  You know those paint samples you bring home to choose your house paint for the rooms?  Ya, keep those.  Because you may not keep the bucket for touch up and when you need to spackle holes from pictures and touch up the paint, color match isn't exactly perfect.  If you don't have the color makeup, you may end repainting entire walls... sucko.

____________________________________________________________
I did manage to get some training volume in...
Last week was the last week to realistically get some volume in without damaging my chances to get quality rest before IM KS in two weeks.

I didn't want to run IM KS with lackluster rest and enough endurance to have a "fast" race.  Fast for me anyway.  So, it was a dance of morning workouts, lunch workouts, family workouts and gym workouts after work lap swimming in the family pool when the masters group took over the lap pool.

Numbers;
BIKING - 104 miles
RUNNING - 17.6 miles
SWIMMING - 3500 yards
TOTAL MILES - 124 miles
TOTAL TIME - 11:05

All and all it was my largest week to date.  Of course I would like to get more time out there, but it was tight before we decided to prep our house for the market, and now it's VERY tight.  That's life, right?

Hoping to get a 40 to 50 mile ride in Thursday morning before work, but we shall see how that goes.  I was aiming for an AM workout today and the body decided that resetting the alarm for another hour of sleep sounded better.  So, sleep I did.

____________________________________________________________
Things I have learned lately....
The way I set and cross my feet under my desk at work causes my knee pain to creep up since it puts my knee at an odd angle.

I tend to get into the work groove and cross my feet and after a while, I shift and realize my knee aches from being at an odd position for too long.  Sucks how a desk job can cause your body pain.  Ergonomics are no joke people!

Had to throw on the BRD Sports Brace last night for some knee niggles.

AMBASSADOR SPOTLIGHT : COURTNEY FOSTER

Courtney is new to running and learning the ins and outs by getting involved in the running community. She started running and got healthy after losing her second child to a stillbirth. Instead of letting the grief be self destructive, she decided to find a healthy way to grieve. Through healthy eating, running, and strength training she was able to shed pounds and move forward with her life in a healthy way. Her love for running started on a snowy Monday night in January when she joined Lou's New Runners Class. She hasn't stopped running and  helps out with Lou's class to encourage new runners. Within one year from starting to run, she has been able to finish a half marathon, start training for a marathon, and lead a group run with the track club.

Outreach: Courtney loves meeting runners through volunteering at races, promoting KCTC at health fairs, and helping with social media for the track club. Courtney also leads a Saturday Group Run in Lee's Summit.
Running Goals: Finish a marathon and run Hood To Coast.

Cyclists, beware road rage

It's a sad day when those that chose to ride their bike to work to stay in shape and save gas get harassed by people that obviously have no interest in a healthy lifestyle...
On they way to work, I was saddened to witness a dude in an older honda accord pull some road rage out of his ass and throw it at a cycling commuter.

As far as I saw, they cyclists did nothing obviously wrong, but the motorists thought it appropriate to stop in traffic to yell at the cyclists and flip him off.

He then proceeded to pull into a turn lane and wait for the cyclists to catch up for what, I don't know.

I have seen the cyclist several times on the way to work.  He wears different cycling team kits, so he's no stranger to biking or being in traffic.  Id' never seen him do anything that would warrant such a tirade.

The driver was a older, pudgy dude with glasses and a beard that didn't look happy in life.

We've all been behind the wheel and been miffed at someone, but to pull over in morning traffic on a bust street and think it necessary to give him some more down the road, really?

Be careful out there people, there are a lot of jerks on the road.

Heartland 39.3 Series Results

Have you been reading my blog?  If so... surely you have read about me blathering on about the Heartland 39.3 Series?

I've seen s a lot of series come and go around Kansas City, so when Heartland 39.3 came around, I was apprehensive, but excited at the same time since the KC Running Company is pretty reputable.

In a media pass / blogger arrangement type agreement, the KC Run Co allowed me to race each event and participate in the series and I related previews, race recaps and my personal survey results.  Check out Man Vs Triathlon to see all the articles for the series.

Each race was a good experience and overall, the series was a nice touch to enhance the race experience and tie 3 quality runs together.

____________________________________________________________
And then they posted the series results...
Most series fall flat when coming to the end.  Very few offer prizes and fewer less actually come back and post results.

Heartland 39.3 followed through!

Check out the results HERE.

Personally, I finished 30th out of 182.  Not too shabby for a slow half marathon runner.  No prize money, though.  ;)

They figured your placing on the total time for all 3 half marathons.  My results were;
  • Ryan Falkenrath - Olathe KS Series Total - 4:59:42.8 - 30th overall
  • Rock the Parkway - 1:37:13.1 – 165 place
  • Kansas Half Marathon - 1:43:17.2 – 175 place
  • Running with the Cows - 1:39:12.4 – 75 place
It was a great experience and I hope to be at it again in 2013.

If you are looking for some half marathons in early spring next year, consider signing up!

2012 KANSAS CITY TRIATHLON RECAP - 5/20/12

You couldn't have asked for a better race day...
But, I could have asked for a better rest day the day before.

As luck would have it, we needed to redo the deck railing and replace some of our deck for house painting and staining this week.  So, Saturday was the only day to get it done.

I spent 12 hours Saturday working on it and 5 Sunday.

I'm not bitchin, but it didn't exactly make me feel rest for Sunday.  =)

New kind of cross fit.  It also makes you appreciate those that do this every day for a living.  Ooof.

Dog approved
Got wood?

____________________________________________________________
I picked up my friend and headed out...
We left his house at 5am, and my wave didn't start until like 8am.  So I was worried about the timing of eating breakfast and hitting the water.

I ate oatmeal for breakfast at 4:30 and took some PR bars and energy blasts for eating an hour before wave start.  I wanted to have something on board sooner than 3 and a half hours before my race start.  It was a delicate balancing act of having something, but not too much.

It worked out well.  Kept my Gatorade going until race start so I had fuel to keep my wetsuit warm before the swim start... if you know what I mean.

____________________________________________________________
For all of the anxieties and forum questions, it went off well...
They need to fix pre-race communications.  The event went off pretty good and all questions were answered when everyone showed up to race, but people had to find out at packet pickup at the race site for specific info like rack assignments and general logistics.

I hate relying on Facebook and online forums for speculation and rumors.  They need to keep the Q and A up to date on the site is all.

The only real issue was one of the buoys decided to come loose from the anchor and float off.  Probably added a couple extra yards to the swim.  Do'h.

Throw all expectations out of the window...
New bike.
New wheels.
Freshly adjusted cables on bike that weren't shifting right Friday and "fixed" Saturday.
Worked for 12 hours on my deck the day before.
Different bike course than the past.
1300 racers instead of 600 last year - overcrowding?

It's hard to look at years past at this event and come up with any valid expectations.

I just wanted to average around 20 mph on the bike and keep 8 min/mile pace on the run.  The swim... I just wanted to make it from start to finish without being kicked in the face.

____________________________________________________________
I did get kicked...
My ring finger is jammed from being kicked from zip-zagging swimmers.  It's swollen enough I can't get my wedding ring on.  Single for a day or two.  ;)

I heard of 4 people that crashed on the bike course.
  • One was adjusting his race bib and lost control. He got back up and finished.
  • One was clipped from behind and crashed.
  • One was cut off and crashed.
  • One was on the side of the road where the ambulance loaded him up.  He was moving and alert, but needed a lift.
Just glad I stayed up on the bike.  I got to 19.7 (19.9 on the Garmin since they include mount and dismount in the bike times).  So, with all of the international distance and most of the sprint tri traffic out there mixed with the new bike setup, it was a success from last year's horrible bike splits.

The run was even not that bad on the trail portions with all of the runners.  The last last was fairly empty since I was the next to last long course wave.  Sucks feeling like you are coming in at the end, but you just have to keep in mind that some people started 30 minutes before you.

How did I fair?

So they send you results in a spiffy email.  As you can see I was 212 out of 706.  Not bad for top 3rd considering a life with a full time job, 2 kids, 3 dogs, and a wife that works full time.  Would I like to have done better, sure!  But, at least I got the bike splits up from last year.  2011 bike times, barf.

Now, it looks all good, and I felt I left what I could out there, but when I looked as past results, I was a little put off.

This was the fastest swim by 2 minutes.  Think what I could have done had the swim buoy been in the right place!

This was the worst bike splits for this race.  I've had a bike fit with the new bike.  There comes a problem with low back pain.  Around mile 12, it started kicking in and when I get a chance, I need to stand in the pedals and stretch out the back.  Anyone else have this?  That kills momentum and when the pain is at peak, it goes down the side of my leg with a dull ache and I can tell I have less power pedaling.  It's nothing new, but annoying.

That was the fastest run, but only by less than a minute.  I wanted to have something for the run so I didn't try and kill myself on the bike.  This is where I also felt the Saturday deck building.  Hammy's were screaming from bending over all day and the hip flexors were much as well.

____________________________________________________________
Overall it was a good time...
My friend, Rob, got his first triathlon under his belt.  I think he had a good time, but he didn't come back saying "I'm hooked" or "that was awesome".  The jury is out if he's getting hooked.

The race went well minus a rouge buoy and some bike wrecks.  For major expansion, the RD did a decent job, but they need to improve the web site and timely updates.

Thanks to SIX Nutrition, Puma, Sockguy and Xterra Wetsuits for the partnerships!

I'm satisfied with my race, but not "happy".  Always want to do better.  Maybe next year.  ;)

Kansas City Triathlon preview and thoughts

This Sunday is the Kansas City Triathlon, part of the WTC 5150 series...
I think this race was created with being a part of the 5150 in mind the entire time.  It's the same RD as IM KS 70.3 and IM Branson 70.3.  This is the 4th year, I think, and the first as a WTC backed event.

I didn't race it last year as it would have been overload with the other events I raced, but it fit this year and registering early, it was the right price!

_______________________________________________________________
It's not getting the best reputation on the forums...
There are tons of questions with suspect sources for answers on Beginner Triathlete.  Some people have talked to the RD in person.  Some people got answers on Facebook.  Sadly I don't Facebook at the day job, so I'm closed off there.  Some people seem to have the answers but don't site the source of the info.

There are questions on;
Racking - assigned spot?  Assigned rack?  Free for all?
T-shirts - they had a contest for design on a nice tech shirt and packet pickup was a white cotton shirt.  Some people are miffed.
The event emails are plain text with no live links.  It's WTC, spice it up with some pictures and link!  =)
People found out at packet pickup that numbers on stickers go on your bike to you can get it from transition after the race, not your helmet.

There just seems to be missing info from the web site and it hasn't been kept up to date with the Q and A.

I feel about 90% trained up...
Better to be 10% under-trained than 1% over-trained, right?  Plus, my focus is more on the IMKS 70.3, so the KC Tri was in my mind, but on the side.

I'm hitting close to the right numbers on the bike these days.  Setting PR's on the run.  The pool seems to going well.  This will be the first chance to put it all together for a tri this year.  I'm anxious to see how it goes.  I think I can do well, but it's a new course and overcrowding on the run is a major concern.

What isn't any fun is the first year in the 35-39 age group.  I'm not most likely in the last wave for most of my races.  While I'm not worried about cut off times, I am worried about crowded race courses and being the last one out there.  Sure, it's nit picking, but who doesn't like a nice wide open course to lay the hammer down?

I also will be riding my ZIPP wheels off ebay for the first race.  I went back to ZIPP from Planet X, and if my test ride yesterday is any indication, you can buy speed (and for a reasonable price if you go used from ebay).  Same course I ride with my bike with stock wheels was bettered by 1.5 mph with the ZIPP wheels.  Hoping that carries over!

The big question is, do I wear my Giro aero helmet and be "that guy" or go with regular helmet?  Might as well throw it on since I have it...

_______________________________________________________________
Predictions... no
The race was around 700 people last year... this year they are looking at 1400.

That's a lot of bodies to navigate.  I may be feeling good, but if paths are blocked and there's too much bike traffic, it might not matter how I feel.

This will determine if this race will stay on my calendar.  I'm crossing my fingers for a good race experience, but I'm going to prepare that it may be a slug fest getting through the sheer number of racers.

Wish me luck!
