#Ruckus Kansas City keeping me going

As I'm sure all endurance athletes can relate, once the weather turns cold and the tri season dries up, it's hard to keep that motivation to stay fit and keep training.

Maybe you can't relate?  It's bitter sweet.  I love the fall season.  Changing leaf colors, cooler temps, football... it's all great but it makes getting up to work out a might more challenging when it's dark at 7am, still.  It's so nice under the covers and it's so cold in the house to get out and find my way to the trainer, treadmill or gym.

But, at least I got hooked up with Ruckus Sports to run the Ruckus Kansas City course this weekend!  You may have noticed a few articles about the race and rEvolution Gym, their sponsor.  I've worked out with Master Brown (I don't have to call him that, you can just call him John) a few timed for articles for Examiner and it's a good fit.  AND, they have classes at 5:45am which works well for work.

TRAINING
So, at least I have some motivation to keep on the training.  It was bad last week as I could not get up to work out before work once day last week.  I made it it by working out at lunch, after work or after dinner.  It's not ideal, but I didn't just slip on the work.

Here's last week;
Biking - 40 miles
Running - 22 miles
Swimming - 4000 yards
Total Time - 9:09 hours

Also stay tuned for new MVT shirts made with help from Rellec!  Black with gold and silver logos for Man Vs Ruckus KC!  SaWeet!

#Crossfit on crack? #rEvolution Gym

Ever been to those boot camps or cross fit classes at your local gym?  Imagine that on crack!

That's what I found with Master Brown at rEvolution Gym in Leawood, KS.

Teaming up with Ruckus Sports to run Ruckus KC, I found rEvolution Gym on the site as a sponsor of the Ruckus race.  I knew from my traditional triathlon and endurance training, I could finish the event.  But, I don't want to just finish, I want to attack the course!

Enter Master Brown and his gym of torture.

I wrote up an intro on Examiner HERE and tried him out yesterday.  It was intense!  Did I puke?  You'll have to wait til Monday to find out when I write up the follow up article.

I would definitely recommend his x-camp class as a supplement to endurance training.  The classes will tear you down and then build you back up.  I'll be sweating it out with Master Brown and his tractor tires in the future!

#OperationJack run for #Train4Austism

Just thought I'd throw this out about the Operation Jack run.  Sam ran something like 61 marathons last year for Train 4 Autism and he is carrying over his last self organized run from last year to this year.

Check it out.  Even if you don't run, consider supporting the cause!

From the site:
Mark your calendar! The 2nd annual Operation Jack Marathon is taking place on December 26, 2011 in beautiful Manhattan Beach, CA. This fun event boasts a full marathon, half marathon, and satellite runs around the world. Register to run or walk, or volunteer with us on race day.

#Running paved trails and missing clothes

As I laced up for a post-work this past Monday, I realized one thing before the run and a couple of things during the run...

  1. Runners vs bike on trails - 75% of bikers are courteous and will warn runners they are coming up behind them.  I know I appreciate a good "on your left" that's the right volume.  Yelling "ON YOUR LEFT" tends to make a runner jump and not move and too softly and the runner can't hear you.  Thanks to that 75%.
  2. Some bikers tailgate runners waiting to pass.  Why?  What's so important?  If you are riding on paved trails and not the road, speed is not your concern.  Pedestrians have the right of way, don't run them over!
  3. Some riders don’t slow down.  Taking a sharp turn at 16 mph with crushed leaves on the pavement isn't smart just by yourself.  Add a runner that you have to navigate around at high speed and you are asking for trouble.  Slow down, speedy.
  4. Some walkers take the whole trail.  A family with two strollers, 2 kids on bikes and 3 adults don't need the entire width of the trail.  Learn to walk on one side so oncoming traffic can get by... c'mon man.
Clothing
  1. Forgot running shorts for after work run.  What's a runner to do?  Call off the run?  Go home and get some clothes thus wasting time you invested to get ready?  No.  How about wearing boxers over under armor compression shorts.  Yes.  Be inventive and keep your modesty!
  2. Them to add insult to injury the next day the workout bag was reloaded but I forgot socks for gym, so I lifted weights sockless.  No big deal.  30 minutes without socks won't kill anyone but if I was running... it wasn't going to happen.
Luckily I have my "just in case" strategy with my workout bag.  I'm ready to run, swim or lift at any time, but I've been getting sloppy about making sure everything is in there.  Need to buckle down!

GEAR
Got a new kicks from The Clymb.  Sweet New Balance Trail shoes.  After running the Wakarusa Challenge I definitely want to get more trail work in.  Hard part is, trails usually don't open pre-dawn and running after work is a tough option since trails are out of my way from work to home.  We shall see how that fits in.  I'm also venturing outside of the Asics brand with New Balance.  They are comfy and seem to fit the right spots... so hopefully it's a good switch for this pair.

#Ruckus Comes to Kansas City

Ever heard of Ruckus Sports? It's along the lines of Warrior Dash and all the other obstacle course races. The difference is that Ruckus things they are the best.

Ya, everyone thinks their stuff is the best, but I'll be putting the course through the paces to see what it's really made of.

That's right, Man Vs Triathlon is taking on Ruckus Kansas City. Bring it on, right?

I'm not exactly sure how my triathlon and running training will fair out there.  I've been lifting for my off season program in addition to maintenance endurance training.  I have no doubt I will have the aerobic capacity, but I'm not sure about the strength endurance.  Hand ladders and other obstacles are a different animal.

I'm looking around to maybe get some cross fit in asap, but any other recommendations to get some last minute work in for race prep?  Race is Nov 5!

It's time for another #giveaway! hint - #massage #TKMuscleTherapy

As you may or may not know, I'm a HUGE fan of sports massage.  I do my best to stretch, rest and recover, but there's some thing you just can't get done on your own.  It's hard to push on a muscle knot and cause all sorts of pain to yourself.  That's where my guy comes in... he likes to see you squirm and if you whimper from the pain, he works harder.  We have an understanding...

My guy is Kent over at Thoroughly Kneaded Muscle Therapy, in Overland Park, KS.  He's been beating me up ever since my training for my first marathon in 2005.  What''s even better is that he is an avid endurance athlete himself mostly involved in mountain bike racing and road bike riding.  He'll use his feet when he has to, but isn't a fan of running.

From the link above, you can see that TKMT is on board with Man Vs Triathlon.  That's where YOU benefit from our partnership... because it's GIVEAWAY TIME!

Kent has graciously agreed to dole out one (1) thirty (30) minute massage each of the following five days this week.  If you win, you can either use the pass for the 30 minutes for free or upgrade to a 60 minute massage and pay the difference between the 30 minute and 60 minute session.

The tough part is, Kent is based in Overland Park, KS.  So, you have to live in the area to take advantage or be visiting KC sometime soon.  The passes cannot be redeemed for cash value.

How do you get in?  Easy.  To get in the drawing, just do ONE of the following.  Feel free to do all, it couldn't hurt your chances!

  1. Follow them on twitter at @TKMuscleTherapy and tweet, " Got in on @TKMuscleTherapy #giveaway - you should too! #TKMuscleTherapy "
  2. Like them on Facebook at http://www.facebook.com/#!/pages/Thoroughly-Kneaded-Muscle-Therapy/102258275697 and write on their wall why you like Kent so much!
Just that easy.  One winner will be chosen each of the next 5 days.  Good luck!

#coupons strike again!

This time I was on my own.

The wife set em up, and I knocked them down.

The mission was home supplies.  Toilet paper, soaps, deodorants and our new favorite, toothpaste.

We ended up with 106 items, and we shouldn't have any needs for deodorant or toilet paper for a year... an what's left will be donated to Operation Breakthrough.

I've bought in, but it can be time consuming,

Check out took some time as we tried to get everyone on board.  When we finally were on the same sheet of music, check out went smooth and I was out of there.  It's not one of our monster runs, but we had some things with the boy come up that didn't allow us to spend too much time on couponing this week.

Until next time!

Riding to work observations

Since the wife and I had a hot date to check out the new Kansas City performing arts center, and she picked me up from work to go downtown, we left my truck at work. I decided to ride the bike back to work yesterday morning and get some miles in.

Low and behold this is the beginning of a little cold front for fall and it was 35 degrees for the ride to work. Oumph. Riding to work with 3 layers, cold and in the dark, I had a few observations. Allow me to share.
  • It’s time to recall some advice about cold weather training HERE. Layers is the key. Somewhere I lost my thick riding gloves (work gloves that work for riding). I used some mountain biking gloves and headsweat glove covers and it sufficed. But, I had an under armor shirt, long sleeve tech shirt, riding jacket, under armor tights, pearl izumi riding tights, balaclava (not baklava) and shoe covers with hand warmers in by the toes. I was just barely warm enough to make the hour ride in.
  • Is it just me or after working out in the cold… you’re cold all day? My fingers are freezing and my toes aren’t much better. I need some hot chocolate and/or starbucks pumpkin spice latte, STAT!
  • Why do runners insist on wearing dark clothes and run in the street when there are perfectly good sidewalks available at o’dark thirty in the morning? If you ask me, you’re tempting fate.
  • It’s a nice feeling when you have a desk job to sit down and “relax” after riding to work.
  • Some drivers just do not pay attention, but we already knew that. I’m glad I did as someone pulled out in front of me, but I was already on the breaks slowing down expecting him to be an idiot.
  • I might complain about being cold, but fall and cooler temps are the best time of year!

2011 Kansas City Marathon Race Report - 10/15/11

What’s a triathlete to do when the season is over and the next triathlon is 8 months away? A marathon, duh.

Kansas City Marathon – 10/15/2011

The KC Marathon wasn’t exactly on my calendar, I was barely eyeing the half. But, after running the North Face Marathon on late August and having stomach issues for the last 6 miles, I knew I could do better. Plus, I was having withdrawal from competing in races and needed a goal to keep focus on fitness during the off season. You know.. a carrot.

Here’s my take on how NOT to train and approach a marathon, and somehow I came through on the other side with no major issues.

By no means do I consider myself a super-athlete or more than your average age group endurance junkie. I don’t have stellar VO2 max (that I know of – never tested) and I produce lactic acid like everyone else. I think my best asset is consistency. Right now I don’t have the expendable time to add more training volume, but what time I do train is aimed at a goal. No junk miles. Tempo, sprints, hills, long and slow or whatever the goal, I don’t “run to run” or “bike to bike”. I mean, I like to work out, but when racing, you need a purpose for the workout.

That all goes into completing a marathon in decent time without running more than 16 miles in the previous 6 weeks and only running more than 16 miles twice in the previous year. Once was the North Face Marathon and one training run for the NF Marathon.

Am I asking for injuries? Probably. But I have off days often, stretch, weight lift and use massage to avoid injuries.
Am I crazy? Debatable but I can hold a full time job and keep my driver’s license.
Am I addicted to endurance racing? Yes.

My goal was to negative split the course from the half mark to finish. At the 13.1 mark I hit 1:58 (started slow, didn’t dodge and weave at the start through the crowd, paced myself and took it easy). I finished 3:52. With fancy math, my second half time was 1:54. Negative split, yes. Is 4 minutes impressive? Debatable. It’ll work for now. I wanted to finish and not feel like death for the last 4 miles. I was also attempting to mitigate the “wall” at mile 20. Lucky me I forgot about the 2.5 mile uphill at mile 20 that KILLED me.

Compared to the same course last year I PR’d by a minute and some change. You can’t cry about that. Better yet, you can’t complain at all with what training I did get in. I made a point to hit all long runs but did not get all of the shorter runs during the week in. Over sleeping, poor time management, pick your excuse, but they didn’t happen like I wanted them to. Oh well. I wasn’t going to win anyway!

The other HUGE issue was the stomach issues I was having with long distance events. Over the course of this season, overcompensation was the name of the game as I was ingesting too much gel, liquid nutrition (other than just water) and energy bites. My staple for training is Push Endurance mixed with GU powder. It works great for long training runs and I don’t use gels for training runs. Only makes sense I should be ok without them on race day. I alternated the my home brew with Gatorade at each aid station and usually walked to entire aid station. The only gel was 45 minutes before the race start and none after that.

Parting thoughts:
  • I wonder what I can do with proper training… 3:30? Better?
  • While I’d love to drop major time year to year from races, bettering last year with less training is more than a lot of people can hope for.
  • Gels – you don’t need them with proper liquid nutrition.  Now, would I do that for an Ironman, probably not but I would stay pretty close to that on the run.
  • Last year around mile 23 I had to stretch my hip flexors every mile. I wasn’t cramping, but my strides were not efficient at all. This year, I didn’t have to stop outside of the aid stations or the two pee stops I made. Improvement with less training!
  • Was it stupid to run 2 marathons 6 weeks apart? Na. It worked out, but it was a tightrope walk to stay healthy and get the training miles in.
  • When you are single, post race recovery might involve a nap, some alcoholic beverages, stuffing your face with your favorite foods, laying on the couch and channel surfing until you nod off. When you have a family with little kids and a household to stay on top of, recovery includes finishing the floor trim in your garage entry, moving storage stuff to your mom’s basement and yard work while trying to keep the kids alive and happy. Certainly keeps you from getting stiff from sitting on one place for too long!
  • The course, the event setup, packet pickup, expo, aid stations, volunteers, food at the finish line… almost everything was spot on. The management had changed to KC Running company and I was waiting to see if there would be transition pains, but I didn’t see any seams rip. Transition was flawless and the finisher tech-long sleeve shirts were pretty sweet!
  • The guy I spotted at the post race area with a "50 marathons in 50 states" shirt was impressive.  Old guy, but impressive.  The scarier part, he hand wrote in "5 time finisher" below the logo.  That's 250 marathons, 6,550 miles just on race days.  Seriously?  And you can still walk after that?
Good job to Mark and Scotty as well and all other KC blogger type peeps that ran the race!

My friend, Rob, post packet pickup.  He ran KC Marathon... 10 YEARS AGO!  welcome back to the half!  He wasn't smiling like that at mile 7...

Sweet finisher shirt!  This is the sleeve!

Visited the wife at her work to being her lunch after the race.  This was the crane dangling over the road.  Is it just me or does that look unsafe?

Entry improvements DONE!  Trim in!

More STUFF to Mom's basement!  More room for more couponing trips.

Push Endurance #giveaway starting 10/17/11

Push Endurance has teamed with Man Vs Triathlon to bring you a GREAT giveaway!

Here's a little about Push Endurance.
  • At Push Endurance, we’re all about performance, specifically, muscle performance. Strong muscles work harder, go further and last longer, powering every step, rep or push of the pedal. Overuse and poor recovery between training sessions weaken muscles. When this happens, performance suffers and injuries occur. You don’t achieve the results you’ve trained so hard for.
  • Introducing Push Recovery - one of the best workout recovery drinks in the market. Designed to increase muscle endurance during exercise and decrease muscle recovery time after exercise, Push Recovery allows athletes to train more often to help them reach their athletic goals sooner. Make each training session more effective and your next competition your personal best with Push Recovery!

Ryan Falkenrath reviews Push Endurance!
  • "Personally, when I take in nutrition via fluid of solids, my system can be picky. I didn't have to "push" Push down to keep it down. It delivers nutrition as advertised and is a quality addition to the endurance supplement market."

Lee's Summit #running group

Lee's Summit Runners! A new group run/walk is starting Sat. Oct 22 at 7am at Gusto Coffee across from Longview College (3390 SW Fascination Dr., Lee's Summit, MO 64081). We plan to run/walk from this location every Sat. at the same time and will head towards the dam and back or around the neighborhood. Plan to have some coffee afterwards if you have time.

Maria Brown and Brad McCleary are leading this group. If you are a runner or walker in the Lee's Summit area looking for a company while you run and motivation, this is the place for you! The members that have already let us know they will be there run varying paces and distances so you will most likely have someone in your pace group to run with.

Email kctcrunner@gmail.com with questions or to let us know you are interested.
