Jammer Time!

Can't touch this, hammer jammer time...

It was time.  People could see my parts through my jammer at the pool.  Generally it's mostly geriatrics and lap swimmers and very few people total, but my wife prefers I keep some things left to the imagination.  I agree.

I wrote a post about jammers a while back HERE.  Comparing the longest lasting fabric and prices, etc.  Well... I have found no matter what type I get, they still wear out after 5 to 6 months.  Just too much friction.  SwimOutlet to the rescue!  They had a nice sale and it wasn't for the completely gross grab bag jammers that your dog wouldn't wear.

Check it out.  Not horrible!  Moral of the story is, go for the sales and load up on multiple options.  For $30 I got two jammers that will probably last 6 to 5 months of cycling through them.  I good quality jammer that would last the same amount of time would probably be $40 for one.  At least with two, you can throw on the pair that fits the mood for the day!

Bike Travel bag preview - takes a lick and keeps on tickin.

It's been a long week!  Working 5 days a week is for the birds.  No 4th of July holiday, no day off from work.  I had....to.....work.....every.....day!  Sad, right?

But, that didn't stop me from riding my bike home and back to work for a night.  Thanks to Em for working the home front while I was home later than usual for a night, I was able to sweat my butt off in 100+ degree heat after work with my PUSH Endurance by my side.  I might write up a post about the most efficient way to pack to ride home from work and back the next morning.  It takes a lot of planning to make sure you even bring your water bottle pre-loaded with drink mix AND fill it with water before you get to your bike.  Drinking dry powder really doesn't help in this heat.

TRAINING
On the training note, this past week was a HUGE week for swimming.  I realized I needed to refocus on the swim while tapering for IM Boulder.  It actually works out well to load up on swimming since it's not as tough on the legs and no impact.  Throttled down the bike riding and the running (just a 10 miler tomorrow) while ramping it up in the pool.  10,500 yards last week to be exact.  To some it may not be monumental but when I struggle to get 3500 yards in some weeks, it's a big deal.

MAN VERSUS TRIATHLON
Scicon tech bags is a partner for the IM Boulder race and I recently was shipped a bag to review.  It makes me nervous to put my expensive carbon fiber tri bike in the cargo bay of an airplane... but I guess a lot of people do it without problem.

This also related to the garage cleaning last week.  The bag arrived and I had no place to put it but in the way in the garage.  Well, it was moved for access to a car and ended up being run over by me when I came home!  I couldn't see the box as I drove in and noticed a bump... and low and behold I ran the sucker over.

Checked it out and looks fine.  Now, if it can take a full size truck running over it, surely it can protect a bike being tossed around in it...???

It's almost like MVP from Jersey Shore, but not as annoying!

It's the marriage of my passion and a "profession".  Yes, I still have my full time job but I'm also putting myself out there helping events get recognized and helping vendors get their products out there.  It's a combination of marketing, triathlon and insanity.

Check out the site.  Kick it around.  Let me know what you think.  It's far from polished but until it takes off, it's what I can put into the project.

So, if you know of an event in need of some PR, send them my way.  If you know of someone needing some product spotlight or a company looking for some PR, send them my way!

Don't be shy!  Tweet it!  Facebook share it!  Post it on your blog!  Lets get some more events lined up!

JANUS LAUNCHES PEOPLE’S CHOICE AWARDS AS PART OF THE JANUS CHARITY CHALLENGE

JANUS LAUNCHES PEOPLE’S CHOICE AWARDS AS PART OF THE JANUS CHARITY CHALLENGE

$20,000 charity prize purse added to the 2011 Race to the Toyota Cup
CHANHASSEN, MINN – Five of the most prominent professional triathletes participating in the 2011 Race to the Toyota Cup have been invited by Janus, a Denver-based global investment company, to compete for a special $20,000 charitable prize purse in a program called the Janus Charity Challenge People’s Choice Awards. The $20,000 charity prize purse will be divided among five charities chosen by the athletes based on the number of votes each athlete/charity receives by October 1st. Votes can be cast and donations can be made to the charities at www.januscharitychallenge.com/peopleschoice, as well as at the remaining Race to the Toyota Cup events.

The charities below are being supported by the following participating professional triathletes:

“The Janus People’s Choice Award allows fans of triathlons to connect to some of the best professional triathletes in the world to support some very noble charitable causes,” said Kenneth Cooper, vice president of Life Time Athletic and Endurance Events. “This is an exciting enhancement to our Janus partnership, the Life Time Triathlon Series and the Race to the Toyota Cup.”
Janus introduced the People’s Choice Awards as part of the Janus Charity Challenge, the firm's signature national giving initiative, which for 10 years has inspired thousands of people –athletes and non-athletes—to meet the needs of their own communities. The Janus Charity Challenge fundraising program has helped raise more than $49 million for hundreds of charities—each one hand-picked by athletes inspired to turn their passion for triathlon into a passion for their favorite charitable cause.

“The People’s Choice Awards is unique in that it is the voice and choice of the people that determines which pro and which charity wins,” said Casey Cortese, vice president of Sponsorships & Community Relations at Janus. “This program allows us to extend the reach of the Janus Charity Challenge and gives a greater number of people the ability to help raise money for great causes.”

Oops, swimming before work and NO TOWEL!

So, off to the gym for a morning swim (side note - for some reason 24 hour fitness decided I told them I was moving and cancelled my membership since you know I have an all sport and super sport and can go to any 24 hour in the country - and every time I go in I have to explain that no, I did not cancel it).

After the morning membership hassle dance, I get the jammers on and reach for... the... towel.  It's in the truck!  Do'h!  I swam knowing I was going to face a delima afterwards.  Air dry?  Go to the truck after the swim dripping wet and just in my jammers?  Use my clean workout shirt in my gym bag as a towel?

TA DA!  I packed a "sweat towel" which is just a white hand towel.  I can only imagine it's what Shaq feels like when using a regular towel.

It pays to pack extra stuff in your gym bag even if you think you won't use it!

Some running tips off Active.com

Recently read the active.com article about running mechanics.  I try not to be a commercial (except for anything I'm pushing!), but I found this acrticle interesting.

While I don't consider myself a superior runner, I like to think I've gotten by ok thus far and have actually improved.  But, when i read this I was like, "hmmm, I actually need decent improvmen".

Article HERE.

Poor Extension - was poor, gotten better - PASS
This is measured by how far behind the body your leg (i.e. femur) extends during the recovery phase of your running stride. I typically like to see a minimum of 16 degrees of femur extension off of the vertical.

Upper Torso Position - I probably lean either too vertical or almost back a little - FAIL
This is the position of your body from your waist to your ear, relative to the vertical position. Ideally, I like to see the upper torso at a forward angle of about five to ten degrees off of vertical. Proper upper torso position helps improve running cadence and sets your body up for a foot strike that falls beneath the body. This improved foot strike position reduces braking forces and vertical bounce.

Hip Drop - I think I do ok on this - PASS
This is best evaluated through video run analysis, and is presented by the dropping of one or both of the hips, upon foot strike and weight transfer. Drawing a horizontal line across the very tops of the hip bones, a drop of more than 14 degrees can be indicative of weak gluteus media and/or TFLs (tensor fascia lata). A good video analysis will very easily identify too much hip drop and the effects that it has on your running stride.

Lack of Shoulder Rotation - FAIL
The shoulders play an integral role in efficient running posture. Many athletes are under the false impression that they should be running with a very square shoulder position. In fact, it is just the opposite as the best runners actually use their shoulder mass as a tool to help propel them forward, late in races when their lower bodies becomes extremely fatigued.

Dropped Arm Position - I actually carry my arms and elbows high so I think I do ok with this - PASS
Both dropped arm and "elbows out" positions are typically the result of hip weakness and/or cognitive habit. Typically, runners with weak hips on one or both sides tend to drop their arm on the side of the weak hip, in an effort to pull the body back over to that side. This is one of those inefficient compensatory motions that slow runners down. These arm positions tend to limit cadence as more rotational mass is presented in the form of arm mass further away from the shoulder.

What they suggest to do to improve:
1) Single Leg Squat
2) Eccentric Calf Raises
3) Two-Joint Hip Flexor Stretch
4) Hill Bounding
5) Rotational Core Work

Swim Meister Tony and the Swimming World Championships

Swim Meister Tony is busy planning his day around the Swimming World Championships.

From Tony :

The U.S. Swim Team is now in Shanghai, China for World Championships. As promised I did find the television schedule. There will be broadcasts on NBC, Sunday the 24th at 1:00 pm, Saturday the 30th at Noon, and Sunday the 31st at Noon. Yep, my DVR is already set. This will show finals of most events. You can get all of the action on the webcasts for a fee. Find more details on the meet here. This will be an exciting meet, and will get you familiar with a lot of the new names that will be in London next summer.

Of course this meet includes some huge names like Natalie Coughlin, Ryan Lochte and Michael Phelps. Some other interesting names to watch, Dagney Knutson from Minot, ND (yes, her family’s home is underwater), cancer survivor Eric Shanteau, 35 year old Jason Lezak, and Mike Alexandrov, who could easily make the Olympic team for his birthplace of Bulgaria , but has chosen to take his shot at making the U.S. Olympic team, which will be significantly more challenging.
This morning Natalie Coughlin posted this on Twitter:
“Here's a pic of the competition pool. Reminds me of Omaha.”

How cool is that? Next summer you could swim in a pool in an arena that looks very similar to where the World Championships were held!

With the heat continuing and no rain, I want to remind everyone again to bring water bottles to practice. Most have been doing a good job of remembering, and we have adjusted the intervals, so attendance has been pretty good and misery loves company, so come on out to the pool to get ready for our Ad Astra Long Course meet (possible the last one), in Lenexa on Saturday, July 30th.
Click here for information about this fun meet that we have hosted the last 5 or 6 years, but will probably need to find a different option next year as the age group Division I meet will be in Wichita next year. Oh yeah, how about going to Masters Nationals in Omaha next year?!? The meet will be held in the Olympic Trials pool after Olympic Trials. Imagine swimming in the same pool as our future Gold medalists. You’ve got over a year to get ready, but there is already information on the USMS website.
I also have one more opportunity that some of you might be interested in. I have attached information about swim instructor positions opening up at Elite Gymnastics and Aquatics in Lenexa. The aquatics manager there told me that she has had some quality instructors over the past several years who were college age and they have a high turnover. They usually work 12-20 hours per week, and she is looking for people with aquatic experience that may have more longevity, so she asked me to see if any of our masters would be interested. If you are interested in the opportunity, contact Gina Skiles at (913) 469-5554.

Need more time in the day for Triathlon training!

I'm sure you all have thought this, I wish I had more time to "fill in the blank".
Spend with the kids, spend with spouse, spend with your family, spend with your friends, catch up around the house, work out, train, race, eat, rest etc.  I even had to take off work last Friday to catch up with the house before we could no longer us the basement or garage!

That also put a ding in training time last week.  I was hoping to get the biggest volume (time wise) in last week.  Not so much.  Only got 9+ hours but 100+ miles.  I'm starting a petition for a new weekend day - SataSunday.  8 day weeks now!

Oh, and by the way, as I was riding this morning I'm started a gradual uphill as a car is coming downhill.  Usually no big deal, it just results in a blind moment where the headlights are right in my face and I have to look down to make sure I stay on the road.  Well, I hear this "good morning" and out of nowhere there are two ladies running head on at me in the wrong lane and it was just about a quick ending to the morning.

Am I wrong or as a runner, wouldn't it be smart to run with the direction of traffic when it's pitch black out and there are no sidewalks?  I admit I've run against traffic flow to see cars coming but that's usually in daylight or on streets with street lights.  I swear... runners around my town are starting to give us a bad name!

TRAINING
Totals from last week
Biking : 86.5 miles
Running : 21.7 miles
Swimming : 3500 yards - that was a HUGE letdown.  Just ran out of opportunities to get to the pool.  Sigh.
Total Time : 09:44

Can't really try and push to top that this week as I need to taper for IM Boulder.  Got my tickets, got my rental car... just need to draw up a plan to pack the bike and get it there in one piece!  There's a product review mixed in there as well after Boulder.  Stay tuned for that.

Life, Liberty and the persuit of a clean garage

Making it all fit and function, part 256.

As the Beastie Boys say, "Well, it's, 50 cups of coffee and you know it's on,
I move the crowd to the break, of break of dawn, Can't rock the house without the" clean garage... or something like that to steal some Friday Lyrics mojo from Christi at Pedestrian Runner.  Friday was an up at 3:30am and GO GO GO until 10pm when I went to bed kind of day.  I need a recovery day from my vacation day from work!  =)

It was a WORK day, that's for sure.  No, not the day job, it was a home project long overdue.  I took the day off work to tackle the projects head on!  No commercials, NO MERCY!

Mission:
  1. Long Bike Ride - 60ish miles
  2. 30 Minute BRIK Run
  3. Clean / Organize Basement and Garage - they were getting unusable and cluttered.  For those of you single people with a house and no kids, get ready.  Kids stuff takes up a lot of space if you don't keep up with it.
  4. Re-caulk Shower
  5. Web Site Work
  6. If we had time, take R2 with the dogs to the dog park - it has lake access for them to cool off in the heat.
Results
  1. 46 miles on the bike.  I needed to get it in before Em left for work cause there was no way I wanted to ride in the 100 degree predicted heat and I didn't get up early enough.
  2. No run.  Ran out of time.
  3. Done and done.  Hung some cabinets, took some stuff to my mom's HUGE basement, trashed some stuff and ORGANIZED!  We can now use the entire garage and basement area!!  See before and after below.  This took from 9am until 5:30pm with only a half hour to eat lunch and watch Little Couple on DVR.  Love that show!  Hence... the list kind of sputtered after this.
  4. Didn't happen.
  5. Didn't happen.
  6. Didn't happen.

I swear that cleaning the garage and basement was more demanding than any half ironman or training day I have done in a long time.  I don't think I have been this sore the day after a HIM...

Thanks goodness this wasn't an OSHA reviewed job site or else I would have been written up for smashing my thumbing while wrenching on lag bolts for the cabinets.  Thought I might have broken a bone, but I think it's just severely bruised.

My tractor sprinkler has a mind of its own - oh and a bike ride

How does a father to two young kids and a wonderfully dedicated husband (Right, Em?) manage a full time job and manage training for half ironmans AND keep his yard alive during the latest heat wave?

I multitask.

Take for instance watering.  They say to avoid watering after 9 or 10am when the sun starts heating up as a lot of water is lost to evaporation.  Don't water in the evening as it could promote fungus (we triathletes know about fungus - athletes foot).  So, if you leave for work at 7 or 6:30am, when do you water?

Well, you turn on the sprinkler as you leave for your bike ride at 5am, of course.

But, that's not the best idea of your lawn watering tractor can't stay on track and wonders off to start watering the neighbors yard while you are out riding...

Caught him before he got too far this morning.  It could have been ugly.

KANSAS CITY EVENTS
Just a final reminder that online registration for the Jingle in July 5K run/walk at Worlds of Fun ends this Wednesday (7/20) at 6 p.m.! The run/walk - the only run to take place entirely on the grounds of Worlds of Fun - is Saturday (7/23) at 7 a.m.

Register at http://www.jingleinjuly.org/!

In-person registration will still be available at packet pickup dates, times and locations - check the "Packet Pickup" tab on the web site for details - but early registration is recommended.

Worried about the heat? The hub of activity will be a cool, sheltered, shaded area. There will be plenty of ice cold drinks before, during and after the run while parts of the route itself will be shaded and misted.

Snoozed less and sprinted into training ride

So, I posted yesterday about acquiring a domain name - http://www.man-versus-triathlon.com/.  If you click it, you are redirected back to my blog.  I was experimenting with changing the blog URL but that seems to be a significant adventure when you have an established blog with a readership.  In time, the Man Vs Triathlon site will be stand alone and link back to this blog.  Stay tuned for future changes.

TRAINING
Got up, a little later than I wanted, and got my 20+ mile sprint ride in.

I had the intentions of getting a run in after for a nice BRIK this morning.  Alarm went off at 3:30 and I was actually aware enough to think "I'll just snooze once and get up".  One snooze turned into 5.  Up at 4:30.  Oops.

It's always a battle but it seems a little less difficult this week.  Yesterday was 5:30 for a recovery pool swim and today was 4:30am for some sprint intervals in the bike.  It's always invigorating to start riding before sun rise and be done after sun rise.  Good stuff.

Tomorrow is a new battle for the "War of the Snooze".  Picture me arm wrestling my alarm clock... and it's winning WITH NO ARMS!

Stats for last week, including Midwest Mayhem Triathlon.
Biking : 65.4 miles
Running : 15 miles
Swimming : 5500 yards
Total Time : 8:18

Lets see if I can top that this week!

For you New Hampshire people, saving $60 is a decent deal if you know you are going to commit to the race a year out.  For us Kansans, is saving $25 really worth the uncertainty if you will be able to do the race ina  year?  It's not like it has ever sold out in Kansas.

Race entries per the last 4 years for IM KS 70.3
2011 : 1476
2010 : 2019
2009 : 1924
2008 : 1204

As you can see it's gained popularity, but last year was a STEEP decline in registration.  If they want to get back to 2009-2010 numbers, dangling $25 isn't going to get it done, I think.

Give me $75 or $100 and then you have me seriously thinking about next year.
