7 signs of the apocalypse...?

Rain
Wind
Lightening
June Bugs
Worms
Is that the start of the end?  Weather.com and the weather channel doesn't know what they are talking about!  Cloudy, 10% chance of rain and 70's my rear!

Try WINDY, RAIN and lightening.  At least the temps were reasonable.  This morning's sprint and hill work was in the pouring rain and the last mile home was hoping I didn't get hit by lightening.  Too bad no one can predict the weather for a living....

TRAINING
Last week:
Biking : 74.5 miles
Running : 17.2 miles
Swimming : 1.9 miles (garmin only has miles... need to convert)
Total Time : 9:05

More to come on a new event coming to Kansas City in August!  Stay tuned!

Crappy Weather, Great Ride?

Playing Russian roulette with the weather these days in Kansas!  The forecasts seems to change hourly so how's a dedicated family man suppose to get his training in if he can't plan for the weather!  Yesterday (Saturday) was suppose to be cloudy, but dry. Today's (Sunday) forecast was originally storms off and on and wind.  So yesterday when making the call, I thought it better to take a chance on cool and dry than windy and stormy.  HA.

TRAINING
10 miles into it and it was cool and WET.  Mist turned into drizzle and 43 miles later I was done.  The odd thing was that it was a pretty decent ride.  I felt good other than playing it safe on wet roads.  I did have an issue with a truck that pulled off a dirt road after I passed him and sped by a little too close and sprayed me with rocks and mud.  Thanks, jerk.

Below is my Garmin summary.  Not bad considering.  Now, just have to get a 50 miler in next week to wrap up volume for IM KS.

I forgot to mention last week while on a early morning ride last week, I look up to see a lady running the middle of the road.  She was wearing a reflective vest but c'mon... o'dark thirty and you're running in the middle of road to avoid wet sidewalks???  REALLY???

HOME
Check out what was sitting on the road in front of my house last night.  Guess the neighbor kid had a nice wreck.  Beauty part is the car is not drivable.  The HAD to have had it towed.  I'm taking bet on how long it sits there.  They are a little notorious for leaving dead vehicles sitting on the road for long periods of time.  Should be interesting.

The week that was

This week didn't play out the way I was wanting workout wise.  It's just been tough going getting out of bed in the AM to hit the training trail.  Snooze got me again this morning and the blankets were sooooo much more appealing than getting up and running 10+ miles.  So, I decided to try and postpone until after work.  Hopefully the weather cooperates.

I did get in some outdoor soccer last night.  Granted I played goalie so there's not much running but there was a lot of flopping around and "slide tackle" attempts.  It was nice to get in something different than running, riding or swimming.  Not to mention, the grass was nice and wet from the rain we have had the kast 3 days.  Wet ground + sliding around and diving on ground = mud and fun.

TRAINING
Need a long run and ride in this weekend.  Saturday WAS sunny and 70's, now scattered t-storms.  Boo.  We shall see how this plays out.

I've been better about my rides being focused on hills or sprints to get more than just "miles" in.  I've been focused on goals for my runs and now I;ve got training rides on track.  Hopefully this equals a stronger bike leg for IM KS.

New to the KC area is Mark.  He has a new blog going up.  Check him out, follow him, comment on him, harrass him, whatever floats your boat.  =)

Wild Weather

So you have heard about Joplin, MO, the tornados in Alabama and we got even more in Oklahoma and we got to spend about an hour in our basement hallway yesterday at work while tornado sirens blared for most the of the Kansas City area.  I'm about done with this weather!  Rain I can handle, heat, cold... but tornados every other day?  No thanks.  I guess I have been less prepared as it seemed the last few springs weren't as wild and woolly.

But I was able to get a ride in this morning.  It was suppose to be a long run but when I finally came to after hitting snooze like 6 times, it was too late and I would have been in a hurry to get to work and get going.  I opted for some speed work on the bike and came to the realization the road bike needs a tune-up.  Top that off with the little speed sensor arm on my Garmin cadence sensor was loose, got caught in the wheel and busted off on the ride.  Luckily I have a replacement since their are cables that go into the arm and it's not just a screw holding it on.  Arg.

COMMENTS and WITTY RETORTS
So since I only get like 2 or 3 comments per post, I thought I'd address them here or just add my 2 cents.

CHRIS : Ya... what can you say about Lance.  I admire his athletic accomplishments but what price have they come at?  Are they tainted?  He's all but incriminated by past teammates, but he refuses to acknowledge accusations and until someone has a sample from him that tests positive and there can be no refuting it... I will always be in a state of limbo.  For all the doping issues, he has the Livestrong organization and that would not have been possible without winning 7 Tours.  Not sure what to say about that.  I'm torn.

TRI LIVING TOGETHER : You found me!  Now what?  =)  Thanks to Kovas for the hookup.

DASHAUN : You can still drop a survey off.  I'll update it when I get a couple more.  Click the survey link HERE or to the left and choose the Heritage Du/Tri.

MIKE : The tough lesson was having the RIGHT tubes.  I had regular tubes, but I needed extra long stems or valve extenders for my ZIPP 404 wheels.  I had extenders but they required a removable valve stem on the tube which I could not get from anyone at the race.  I'm on tubulars now and I have a fix-a-flat tube on the bike but I'm not 100% confident that will help me with a flat.  I'm a little nervous about that.

Back to Triathlon

Nice threshold run this morning but you know, at times I wish I was a dog.

Why?

Cause if you have GI distress and you're a dog, you find a nice spot, hunch over and let it go. People? If you have culture, then you look for a toilet of some sort. Usually threshold runs I have walks between sets so GI isn't as much of an issue, but today it was. Mile 5 into a 6.25 miler it became abundantly clear what was needing to happen.

It was timing of a lifetime to get to the bathroom at home EXACTLY when I NEEDED to! Holy crap... literally.

But I digress and took the dogs for a cool down walk.

TRAINING
Last week's numbers:

So far so good with Garmin connect. Just have to remember to enter swims and non-GPS events. No problem and you can search and filter all you want.

I was pretty happy that I got 3 of each workout last week. The long ride was 30 on the trainer instead of 40 on the street, but the weather didn't want to cooperate so you take what you can get.

Hoping for some miles this week but rain is looming for the rest of the week in the am's. Booooo

EXAMINER
I tallied the Biksource Duathlon and Triathlon survey results. I got 7 entries and the rating was pretty good at 7 from 0-10. I'm also going to check participation numbers as I think they are declining in participation which could be due to weather or popularity has peaked for the event. We shall see.

Kansas City Triathlon went on without me. Top 3 HERE.

Can you believe ANOTHER Lance teammate is turning him over for doping? Coming out of the woodwork. False or true, it's got to be tiring for him.

EVENTS
Next on the horizon is the Ironman Kansas 70.3.  Couple weeks away but hopefully better results than last year...

We interrupt this triathlon blog for breaking news...

Normally i would be talking triathlon, training, ducking out of the KC Triathlon yesterday for not wanting to pay $100 to do it.. BUT we have has some serious weather around here!

You all know about Alabama and what they had a few weeks ago, well now it's Joplin, MO's, turn. They got slammed yesterday and 89 are already confirmed dead. The city has 50,000 people and they estimate 30% of the town is wiped out.

If you are interested in helping out, check out the Ozarks Red Cross arm and consider donating.

I'll also place a Red Cross link in my scrolling sponsor and partnership links at the top of my blog.

Prayers are with the people in and around Joplin.

Training Data Lost - Solution Found

This is the ABC's of me baby.... YA KNOW!

I'm OCD. I admit it. Not to the point of having to check my alarm EXACTLY 3 times every time I go to bed... sometimes it' 1, 3 or 6. I've had enough "no alarm" days that I'm paranoid about the alarm not going off.

I WAS that way with my training log. I HAD to update it every day. That mystical magical intertwinement of data and functionality. I tweaked that spreadsheet for 3 years.

Well, as you all know I had my USB drive crash issue a few days ago. 6 months of data and tweaking lost. Lost 2 month of 2010 and the work I did to summarize it all. I was a little tweaked out to say the least. THIS IS WAY TOO MUCH PRESSURE!

But I think I found a solution to that mess. Garmin Connect. In the past it was more to get the data from my garmin 310xt to look at some splits and then transfer it to the spreadsheet manually. Well, why not use Connect totally?

No double entry. You can add manually entries for treadmill (I don't use my footpod) and swim workouts. You can pick dates to summarize, download to spreadsheets if you want to do anything with it... sweetness!

Here's this week so far. Need a swim, bike and a run in this weekend at some point.

Looks pretty sharp. If I wanted to capture each day I can go to the activities table and there it is. I think I'm sticking with it since you can also download to BT and some other sites.

No double entry. No hassles. No USB storage to worry about crashing. Hopefully Garmin servers are reliable....

Macca Gets His Book On

If you read my post yesterday, you know that Chris McCormack has a book coming out and I was lucky enough to get a crack at reading it before it hit the stands.  That was the good news and the bad news was my USB external drive crapped out, but I digress.

If you have followed the sport at all and you're not living under a triathlon rock, you know that Macca has won the Ironman World Championship in Kona twice.  His latest was a surprise victory last year as most were not picking him to contend at all.

Check out my take on EverymanTri on how I cracked the book open at a low point and it helped pick me up and gave me some determination not to crawl under a rock with so much going on at home, work and life.

You can pre-order it now and it will ship first thing next Monday.  See below for the amazon pre-order link.

On the losing data front, I have decided to go with Garmin connect for tracking my training since I eliminate duplicate entry and you can download the data to adjust how you want.  Anyone else stick solely with Garmin?

And, has anyone heard of Mint for financial tracking?  They have a free online service and you can add your checking, savings, credit cards, student loans and more.  Just trying to find ways to lose the spreadsheet lifestyle.

Thursday, May 19, 2011

Dude, really?

USB external hard drive.....?  CRASHED!  Just lost 6 months of data...spreadsheet updates, article docs, pictures... luckily I backed up back in November but time escaped and I had not updated in a long time.

If I want to pay $500 up front, I can MAYBE get SOME data back.

Lame.

So here I am.  I lost 6 months of training data, last six months of event details.  While it's not the end of the world, it was nice to be able to look back at historical data.  I'm not sure if I want to go back the backup and update to today.  Probably not for training since I stopped with daily mile a while back.  I have Garmin connect but it does not capture treadmill runs and swims.

What do you guys out there use online?  Training Peaks?  I'm tempted to go all to Garmin connect since you can download into a spreadsheet and look at what you want.  At least that way the data is still there if my files get lost again.

But I also kept stuff like spreadsheets on personal finances, my formulas for rating races, keeping track of Falkee Triathlon.  Gone.

But at the same time it's liberating like Fight Club. "Tell him. Tell him, The liberator who destroyed my property has realigned my perceptions."  I refuse to waste more time dealing with it by recreating past data.  I MIGHT do it for event results.  But then there's Athlinks that does it automatically.

I'm not sure what I will end up doing but I spent the morning trainer ride (morning t-storm forced me indoors) reading Chris McCormack's new book coming out next week.  Check EverymanTri.com for my review coming soon!

Time to stop moping and do something productive instead of trying to explore ways to save my data....

Wednesday, the morning that didn't happen

So I've been playing with what day I take for recovery during the week.  Sometimes Wednesday, sometimes Thursday.  I try and get a long ride Wednesday, rest Thursday and long run Friday.  I do this as my wife works a lot of weekends so I can't exactly take a toddler and infant on a 2 hour bike ride or and hour and a half run.  I mean I could, but I don't think it would go well.

This morning I was feeling the need for sleep and I took it... glorious sleep until 6am... ahhhhhh.  And now, a frittered morning of ridable bike weather.  Oh well.  There's always the trainer in the basement..........

TRAINING
Last week's totals including Bikesource Duathlon
Bike : 46 miles
Run : 16 miles
Swim : 5585 yards
Total : 6:24 hours

Like I have mentioned, I hope to get outside more for my rides and get some hill and sprints in to increase the speed and power.  This week may not cooperate as tomorrow, Friday and Saturday are looking soggy.  I may have paid the price by not riding this morning and opting fort today as my rest day... we shall see.

2011 Bikesource Duathlon and Triathlon Race Report - 5/15/11

WHAT : 2011 Bikesource Duathlon and Triathlon

WHERE : Heritage Park, Olathe, Kansas
DISTANCE :
  • Duathlon : 2 mile run, followed by an 11.5 mile bike, and a 3 mile run
  • Triathlon : 0.33 mile (587 yds.) swim, followed by an 11.5 mile bike, and a 3 mile run
EXPERIENCE AT THIS EVENT :
  • I have competed in this event since 2004 missing only 2005.
  • Ran the DU 2004, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2010
  • Ran the Tri 2009 and 2011
  • Past Results

PERSONAL RECAP
Forecast Monday for Sunday race was sun and 70's.  By Friday the forecast was clouds and mid 50's.  Yikes.  I knew this one was going to hurt.  I train in the cold but swimming in the cold?  Not really.  Plus, I don't want a 15 minute T1 and T2 putting layers on so I knew I was going to have to bite the cold bullet.  They actually gave people the option to switch to the Duathlon but I was there for the triathlon and needed the whole experience for IM KS prep.
PRE RACE : Cold.  Cloudy.  Maybe 10 minutes of sunshine.
  • No rain though!  Last year was chilly and semi-wet and the swim was cancelled due to poor water quality.  Last year was suppose to be a tri but turned into a du for all of us.
  • Since I had number tats I only needed age group in the markings area.  Nice and smooth since I was like 5th to transition to open it up.
  • It's relaxing there nice and early.  Chill.  Check out competition.  Drool over cool bikes.  Port-a-potty stops.  Sit back and relax.  Port-a-potty stops.  Check transition setup.  Port-a-potty stop.
  • I did notice the demand for the john's was down.  Not sure if it was the weather or the times, but participation seemed low.

SWIM : 0.333 miles (587 yards) - 9:02 - ranked 19 of 115 men - 1:32 min/100 yards
  • Quite an improvement from 2009.  Gain of a minute and it was FREEZING!  I thought I would get some relief when air temp was low 40's and water was 60's.  Not really.
  • The course had an S shape to the turn around which I kind of cut a little since I swim wide to avoid full contact swim starts.  Some people were wider than me!
  • Ice cream headache.  You know those?  That was what I had 1 minute into the swim.  It lasted until mile 1 of the run.  It hurt!
  • I'm not sure how I held my pace.  Maybe I was trying to get out as fast as possible?  Once I hit the cold water I was trying to focus on getting a breathing pattern and I knew that it was only 500 yards and a sprint so I could try and go all out.  Not like I was worried about overheating or dehydration out there...
BIKE : 11.5 miles - 36:34 - ranked 37 / 115 men - 18.9 mph
  • F on the bike.
  • For starters I was freezing.  I didn't want to extend T1 and I could barely feel my fingers to get socks and shoes on and trap my helmet on.  After frigid T1 in all my Planet-x tri kit glory, I was just plain cold.  Add into that the deterioration of the park roads, rock on the wheel that I was nervous was going to flat me, narrow park roads with duathlon and triathlon people riding 3 laps and a jerk on a bike, and you have a slow bike leg.
  • Part of it was me and my training for the bike.  It' just not been where I wanted it.
  • Another part was over crowding.  I was up out of aero for 2/3 of the bike leg per lap.  It just wasn't worth the chance of a wreck with over-crowding and potholes.
  • To the jerk that yelled at me when passing:
    • I was passing a slower rider on the right.
    • We were coming up on a narrow spillway with a tricky pavement joint that is not the safest.
    • I had my planet-x 82/101 wheelset and the wind was playing tricks on me.
    • I was worried about a rock and flatting
    • There is no reason that you should scream at another rider (I was clear when I started passing but you were just in too big a hurry) and then be an ass when you pass making more comments.  This is not Kona, nor are you trying to qualify for Kona.  There is only a small plaque for age group 1-3.  No prize purse, no groupies at the end to impress.
      • Back off.  Chill out.  Get real.  Get a clue.  Take a hike.  You pick.

RUN : 3 miles  - 20:29 - ranked 17 / 115 men - 6:50 min/mile
  • I'll take that!
  • Considering the frozen chunks of ice my feet became over the bike ride, sub 7 minute miles kicks ass.  I could not feel the bottom of my feet until 2.75 miles of the 3 mile run.

OVERALL : 01:09:57 - 25 / 142 overall - 9 / 23 age group - 24 / 115 men
  • About 1 minute slower than 2009.  Even though I nailed the swim and run under the circumstances, the bike was disappointing.  Partially it's training and partially I lost my nerve to stay aero in a crowd with suspect roads and cross winds.  I'm torn that I finished string but I could have done better on the bike.

It's a well organized traditional event.  It's been there for years and is a good race for the first timer or someone looking to kick off the season to gage their ability thus far.

Thanks to Planet-x for the help on getting the sweet wheels and the tri kit!
Also check out the race tats of a few other sponsors - Smart Mount Technologies (review on the number mount for the seat post coming ip), SockGuy socks, FLUID Recovery and Xterra wetsuits!

AND broke out the TMAT for the first event of the year and it worked great!  Review coming and if you are interested, I am the hookup in the KC area so drop me a line if you are interested in one.
I like all of the used junk sitting around.  Put all that time into setup and afterwards looks like a tornado hit!

New Week - Heritage Tri teaser

Mondays keep coming like death and taxes!

Bikesource Sprint Triathlon report from yesterday's race coming soon.
Pictures are up.
Official results are NOT up yet.

To kick this week off I hit some hill repeats on the bike this morning. Why tear up my legs the day after a triathlon?
  1. It was a sprint tri, so I'm not exactly beaten up form the race
  2. While my swim time improved over one minute and run improved, my bike time was HORRIBLE compared to past races.  Barf.  I need to get some power back
Brief pre-cursor to my performance:
  • Swim - COLD AS $#!&!!!!!.  Brain freeze but my time was a minute better than last time I did this race.
  • Bike - Sucked.  Crowded and jerk on the course.  Wind also played with my planet-x 82 front wheel.
  • Run - Killed it.  First mile was sub 7 minute which is stellar straight off the bike for me.  Held on for 7 min/mile average but I could not feel my feet until mile 2.75 of 3 miles of the run.
  • Major theme - IT WAS COLD!!

Heritage Park Triathlon - the day before

Have a nice sprint triathlon race kicking off the multisport season tomorrow.

Couple things that are floating around in my head:
  1. The weather.  It's now in the 50's for the high and potentially rain and wind tomorrow morning.  On Monday, the Sunday forecast was sunny and 70's.  What a difference a week makes.  I really don't want to run a duathlon like last year when the swim was cancelled due to poor water quality.  And it was just too cold.
  2. I raced my company's corporate challenge bike race Tuesday night.  I've been on my trainer more and tried to get out on the roads more this winter and thought I had a better leg up on the bike... but I think the combo of volume and weighing less (lost some muscle mass as well) has hindered me.  I was 40 seconds slower this year than last where others I knew improved.  That sucked.
So, I'm hoping it's a full triathlon and my bike effort doesn't suck.  Hopefully the low volume week will give my legs some pep and the race atmosphere we give me some energy.

Hopefully the weather gets past this whole 50 degrees for a high thing and I can hit some hills and sprints outside!  Time to move past the trainer!

Time will tell.

Training upheaval this week

So Tuesday was the bike race for Kansas City Corporate Challenge for my age group.  They have two nights (luckily I was Tuesday since last night got rained out).  It's only a 3 mile loop but the cool part is that it's on the Kansas Speedway NASCAR track!  Smooth and flat but the area is pretty open and the wind was in full force...

But that all goes to having to juggle my training schedule this week.  I didn't want to wipe myself out for the race Tuesday so I skipped Tuesday morning workout and did my long ride Wednesday morning and this morning just didn't have enough get-up-and-go to get out of bed and hit the pavement.

But, I needed a recovery week AND I have Bikesource Triathlon Sunday so probably better off that way (notice I'm trying to justify slacking off today).

The day job has kept me full up busy these days so between that and Em's foot troubles AND a sick 3 year old (which Em does must of the work and I play cleanup where I can) energy is hard to come by unless it's artificial.

Fluid Giveaway Winner - 5/8/11

And the winner of the FLUID Recovery giveaway is....

Christi from Pedestrian Runner!

How did I pick her?

Very eloquent if you ask me.  I assigned numbers to entries based in the order received and how many entries each person had.  That got us to 21.  To not leave it completely to fate on one draw, I used Random.org and the first person with 3 hits on their entry numbers won.

Christi got to 3 hits first!  From the looks of her blog posts, she's picking up the training so she could probably use some recovery drink!

Congrats.  Hit me up at falkeetriathlon @ hotmail . com with your mailing address and all of this sweet goodness is YOURS!

Thanks all for playing!

Walking on the wild side

Dr Evil - "At the age of [34] a Zoroastrian named Vilma ritualistically shaved my [chest and arms]. There really is nothing like a shorn [chest and arms]... it's breathtaking- I highly suggest you try it." - Source

If you missed the reference, I'm talking about the habit of triathletes shaving body hair. Now, women already shave (usually) so it's nothing new, but guys on the other hand... not so much.

I admit I've taken to shaving chest hair.  Due to wearing temp tats for races this year, I need to shave arms and legs to avoid pulling hair out later when I take them off.  I've tried with the arms and it's definitely a new feeling.  You don't realize how much sensory input you get from arm hair until you lose it!  Plus I'm colder more often just sitting around.  Odd.

The theory and rumor for this oddity for guys is lessening resistance in water and if you crash, less problems with scabs and hair in them.  Other than that... I have trouble seeing the real advantage (other than in the nether regions for chafing and what not).

Any thoughts out there?

Get er done

Kicked off Monday morning with a Threshold run which I have been missing for a few weeks.  It was the odd man out workout.  Aside from GI issues and wanting to barf, it was pretty epic.

I bought into Threshold runs back in August last year when we had Chris Legh speak at a packet pickup for Jackson County Triathlon.  It was one of his staples to stay fast and after setting new PR's for 10k and 1/2 marathon this year, I'm buying in.

I feel the need, the need for speed!

But, if you think I'm full of bunk, check out this blog posting tauting the virtues of lactate threshold work.

TRAINING
Hit the 10 hour mark last week.  It took some coordinating and lack of sleep, but got every workout but one in last week that I wanted!  It included a nice ride to the gym, swim and ride home.  Got a workout in and saved like $10 of gas to drive there and back!  Sadly, to maintain energy after the ride/swim/ride to jump on yard work, I downed a Mountain Dew Live Wire mixed with 5 hour energy.  Great recovery.... NOT.  But it staved off the coma feeling later from fatigue and I was able to mow, weed eat, move some rocks, clean dog poo, mulch, weed and some other stuff while keeping track of a 3 year old.  (Wee Man was hanging out with Nena for the afternoon).

And finally, happy belated Mother's day out there!  What did I get my wife, you ask?  Well, let me tell you it was a pure treat!  I took responsibility of watching the kids (with the help of my mom and mother-in-law) and gave my wife a well deserved.... day at work.  She worked like a lot of weekends.  But, as some of you parents know, sometimes work can be a nice change of pace from kid duty.  So, ya she was slaving away for 13 hours but didn't have to tend to kids the whole time.

Do I believe that's a real treat?  No.  But you do what you can to find humor in the day-to-day!

Long training days during the week

GIVEAWAY CLOSING TOMORROW!!

With how Em's work schedule goes, she's at work a lot of weekends.  To accommodate, I try and get my long rides and runs in during the week since we all know how unpredictable life can get with a 3 year old and 8 month old!

So, if I miss a workout on the weekend, it's not volume and I can live with that.

BUT, Friday I just couldn't drudge out of bed after 40 miles Thursday morning on the tri bike.  To make sure I got it in, I ran after the kids went to bed Friday night.

A.  Running late at night is kind of creepy with people still out and about and some neighborhoods with dimly lit streets.  At least at 4am most people are asleep.

6.  I was definitely more physically tired working out after a full day of work.  I felt it.

VI.  I could NOT get to sleep for over an hour after I was done running.  My mind was still working with the run endorphins.

Q.  For some reason I just did not sleep as well.

In conclusion of this science experiment, I need to drag my sad self out of bed and get the runs done in the AM!

Bust out the riding temps!

GIVEAWAY ENDING SOON!  Check it out, sign up, only 5 entries so far!  YOU COULD WIN!

The Good
40.65 mile ride... OUTSIDE! Temps held in the mid 50's so that was good enough for me to get a couple layers on and hit the road!  I won't discuss my average speed as it could use some improvement, but I got the trusty tri bike out this morning pre-dawn and busted out 40 miles. Worked out pretty good as I got to work on time afterwards!

The Bad
Wife is having a heck of a time with some foot issues. I won't go into detail but it's all I can do to offer support and try to help her get through this. She may start a blog to relate how an active person deals with limiting physical ailments so stay tuned.

TRAINING
Lets dissect my 40 miler.  Below is the Garmin report from the ride.

While the main goal was volume, I'm always looking to hold some something close to "I wish" race pace.  I guess I should look at it as long runs.  Some schools of thinking is that your long training runs should be 1 minute per mile LESS than race pace.  Goal is volume, not speed.  Then, you work speed in other workouts.  To be honest, I have been focused on getting rides and distance in.  I loathe trainer rides for the most part and usually check out watching morning news or checking up on blogs.  I know, it's like my take on running with headphones and not being in the now.

While I believe I kept a large majority of bike fitness, I can ride all day long but my speed has declined.  Now that the weather has taken a turn for the warm, I'm aiming to hit some hill repeats and sprints.  Hopefully that will get me back in the groove.

Another take is that I have been extra focused on running and swimming.  I try the best I can to get three swims of 2500 yards or more (not just straight freestyle, but drills) and 3 runs per week.  The three runs break down into a day of sprint and hill intervals, a day of threshold running and a long run.  I can usually hit 2 and the leftover turns into a BRIK run of 3 miles or so.

So there you have it.  My excuses for not being fast on the bike!  =)

Swimming Challenge - Swim Meister Tony

Direct from Swim Meister Tony, MOVY participates in the USMS 5K/10K postal swim meet!

This is an opportunity for those of you that like the challenge of the longer swims! Also a good chance to get an outdoor swim in before pools open on Memorial Day weekend. These postal events are kind of a remote swim meet, where you swim where ever you are, and mail in your results to see how you compare to others across the nation. If you can’t make it on May 22, you can do it on your own anytime between now and September 15. All you need is access to a 50 meter pool, and a friend with a stop watch.

2011 will make the 6th year the MOVY has actively participated in the USMS 5K/10K postal swim meet. Each Spring or early Summer we reserve a long course meters pool to hold a time trail for the 5K/10K postal. So here is your opportunity to challenge yourself:

Where: Roeland Park Aquatic Center, 4843 Rosewood, Roeland Park KS 66205

When: Sunday 22-May-11, first heat at 11:15am and second heat at ~12:45pm. Please arrive by 11am with paperwork completed. RPAC has the capacity to heat the water if the early spring air is cool, but we anticipate the pool to be 78-80 F (good for a long swim).

Note: Waterpolo has a workout from 9:30-11am, so we will start after they are done.

How Much: To cover pool time and supplies, $7.50/swimmer and entry fee for event is $10. Checks can be written for the whole amount to "MOVY Masters" and cash will be accepted. MOVY will enter your splits and time into the on-line entry, and MOVY will pay for relays into the event.

Bring: Comfortable swimwear that is FINA approved. Many swimmer also like to have some "body glide" to prevent chaffing during the long swims. Many swimmer like to have two or more pairs of goggles. With mid-day swim we also encourage everyone to wear sunblock. Bring a helper with you to support the timing and split taking; but if you cannot find someone to help, come anyway, as we find ways to cover all the timing and splits.

What else: Reserve your lane by e-mailling the coordinator: Anthony Thompson, swimtotoswim@msn.com or call and leave a message at 913 262 2464.

What if: The postal swim event goes from 15-May-11 to 15-Sept-11; so if you cannot make this time trail 22-May-11, we encourage you to complete this fitness challenge at your own pool and follow the on-line instructions below.

LeftLaneSports.com - ever try them?

My Monday post about The Clymb drew a comment about LeftLaneSports.com.

"Good article. Have you tried out LeftLaneSports.com though. Their prices are always cheaper than the Clymb's, and they ship almost everything within 1 day! No waiting around 5 months for the Clymb to get around to it. Plus they have a way bigger selection with their footwear, apparel, and gear shops. Just thought it would be helpful. PS they had a TON of Sugoi cycling/tri gear today!"

LeftLane is also one of my affiliates but I have yet to try them out. We'll see if they have anything I'm looking for.

Anyone use them? What do you think?

It's next week already!

First off, don't forget the FLUID Recovery GIVEAWAY going on until Sunday!

Secondly, most of us out there are age groupers training when we can balancing family, work and triathlons (or whatever endurance races you're in to).  Last week my wife was having some health issues that I was compelled to call in to work and stay home to help her.  I had no problem doing that.  It's what needed to happen.  Luckily I have a bike trainer and treadmill at home so I could get my workouts in early morning without leaving the house in case something happened.  It was an intricate balance of getting workouts in when I could and managing kiddos with a sick mommy.  I bring this up since this blog is mostly about endurance sports and how to balance that with family.  I try not to run life thinking about triathlons all the time, but I bet my wife would say different (ok, maybe I think about them 80% of the time).  =)

I must admit I'm wiped out and catching up with work this week is an overwhelming task but somehow it's getting done at the moment.  I know in the past I had a habit of accepting more work than I had hours in the day for if I wanted to have a life away from the desk.  Since then I'm able to gage how much work is enough to keep me going (more than 40 hours a week at that) and I've learned that I can admit when I'm full up at work and can't accept any more assignments.

It's a delicate balance and at times draining, but it's worth it.

What issues do you guys face when life gives you lemons?  Reduce work?  Reduce training?  Make permanent life changes?  I must admit I struggle with letting go of things I love doing but sometimes the bigger picture is more important.

TRAINING
Last week's total.
Biking : 83 miles
Running : 19 miles
Swimming : 0 yards - need a lap pool in the back yard when I can't get away from the house
Total Time : 7:18 - add in 3 hours if I would have got swimming in
Odd thing was that was the highest mile week this year and not a lick of it was in the pool!

The Clymb - is it for real?

I don't know if you guys have ever tried out The Clymb, but I have.  I signed up a while ago and recently they put some hydration packs up.  I have (well, my wife got it and I stole it when she was forced to stop running - long story) the amphipod 3 small bottle belt.  It services my needs, but I wouldn't say it exceeds it.

Here comes The Clymb to save the day.  They recently run a sale event for Ultimate Direction gear.  I wanted a belt that had ample space for my keys and phone while holding one larger bottle.

Now, this isn't a post about the actual hydration pack, but more about The Clymb.  I had always been a little apprehensive about the site and never really came across anything I had a strong urge to buy until now.  I was worried about price (scam?), shipping time and quality.

Price
I did what any tech savvy person would do, I googled it.  Turns out the deal they were running WAS cheaper than any other site including shipping.

Shipping
Would I get it in 5 days or 5 months?  They advertise one reason they can offer low prices is they take a little longer with shipping.  I actually got it in less than two weeks.  That works for me.

Quality
I used it for a 9 mile run and I was happy with it.  There are some issues about fit and form (I can live with them), but I got what I paid for.  The seams look to be of good quality and all the features work.

Overall I got a good deal on something I was really wanting.  I for one have bought into The Clymb and wouldn't hesitate to buy from them again!

Thanks for reading my take and if you liked what you read, please consider signing up for The Clymb notifications HERE!

Also, don't forget the latest GIVEAWAY!
