What did you say?

I find myself saying that all the time, "what did you say"?  Thanks to some water trapped in my ear from a Saturday swim, I can't hear very well out of my right ear.  Sucks.  Over the counter ear drops didn't help all that much.  It gets gradually better every day but I have to talk/listen every day at work, so it's hard to focus with no hearting and sometimes a gurgling as the fluid moves in my ear.  ENT appointment next week to look at it and some other ear issues.

TRAINING
Last week was pretty good.  Only missed one trainer ride (yes trainer b/c the weather has gone back from delightful to suck in a week) and that trainer ride was only recovery 15 miles.  No sweet.

Last week
Biking : 52 miles
Running : 17.25 miles
Swimming : 9000 yards
Total Time : 8:24

I've also decided to ditch daily mile entries.  It's just too time consuming to double enter and the only real reason I was using daily mile was for the blog widget.  It no longer functioned in the space I had on the blog redesign so no widget, no point.  Gone.  My spreadsheet is tailored to what I need.

I've also been on the feed for Scotty Tri's blog.  He posted about "workflow" (I can tell his work is technical by that description because that is NOT a triathlon term - haha).  It hits home b/c it took me a while to get the points he stressed after training for a few months.  Very good tips on how to maximize your time and organization in order to limit your excuses for missing workouts and not having enough time in the day.  Good stuff.  I think he will be pretty successful at the KC Tri in May.

EXAMINER
List of KC events this weekend including the Brew to Brew Relay run.  Haven't ran in for a few years.  It's a GREAT time, but takes the entire day and you are wiped out at the end.  Not exactly the best thing for a couple with two young kids to come home and not pass out and let the 3 year old take care of the 6 month old.
Also bulletin for early bird price extension for some triathlons in the KC area.

This Week With Swim Meister Tony

This week with Swim Meister Tony:

We've Got Spirit!
Fort Lauderdale Aquatics Masters

Some coaches are so popular that visitors fly in from all over to swim with them. Swimmers from the Metropolitan LMSC (New York) visiting the ISHOF pool in Fort Lauderdale on a winter training trip had to share their lanes with another guest when they swam with Coach Marty Hendrick of the Summer Nationals Champs, Fort Lauderdale Aquatics Masters. The brown pelican, who was not charged a drop-in fee, was courteous and observed all points of etiquette. He waited behind the lane before hopping in, feet first, and circle swam. FLAQ Masters Coach John Acton photographed the pelican for stroke technique analysis purposes, but he flew off before receiving the feedback.

Do's and Don'ts of swimwear at masters swimming.

If you live in Kansas City, check out this killer swim challenge!  100 x 100 on 100 seconds.  That's 10,000 yards of swimming!  April 2nd, same day as rock the parkway so if you don't hit that run, check this out!

3 Pools Monday - 24 Hour Fitness

In my quest to be a sufficient swimmer for triathlons, I would consider myself a connoisseur of 24 Hour Fitness Pools in the Kansas City area. I spend 3 to 4 hours a week in the pool aside from the time I spend in the weight area or on treadmills.

In that time, I have noticed some deficiencies. At first it was mainly at the Ward Parkway 24 Hour Fitness, and I considered it an anomaly to that facility, but lately I have spent more time in other pools and noticed a common theme of common pool neglect at the 24 Hour Fitness Chain.

Lets lay out the ground rules. I am not an employee nor never employed by them. The following is my observations and opinions, no legal implications and this maybe a coincidence these issues happen when I'm at the pool.

Ward Parkway Ctr - Sport
Club type: Sport
Kansas City
Hours: open 24 hours per day

The bulk of my swimming is here. It's close to work which is nice.
Issues
  1. The pool lights usually are not all working at the same time and make the water appear murky.
  2. They like to perform hot tub maintenance at 6:30am, when the morning crowd would like to us it.  What's wrong with doing that at 10am?
  3. They used to clean the pool over lunch and the power cords would slip in the pool and if you were lucky would smack you in the head as you swam laps.  Plus, the window cleaner would just about knock you out as you're gasping for air while exerting yourself in the pool... ya, um you spray cleaning solution in an area where people are breathing deeply?  Really?  THEY FIXED THAT since and I haven't had that issue in months.
  4. They have a high incidence of the "swimmer" that kind of walks, stands, jumps in the pool lane taking up an entire lane when people are waiting to swim laps.  In reality they have that right but it kind of defeats the purpose of a lap pool when people are not swimming laps.
  5. A LOT of people don't think showering before jumping in the pool is necessary.  If you sit in the sauna or come in from the weight area covered in sweat, THE POOL IS NOT THE PLACE TO WASH OFF AND COOL DOWN!  Shower first before getting in the pool, PLEASE!
  6. People get in with their shoes on.  During the winter all that salt and sand gets tracked inside and they are bringing it into the pool.  The pool has enough salt for bacteria, we don't need some added from the outdoors.
  7. No one from the staff really enforces any rules.  It's like the wild west in the pool area.  I understand they don't have resources for someone to be in there 24/7, but maybe poke a head in every 15 to 30 minutes to make sure everyone is playing nicely?
  8. Swim caps.  While not required, it's nice not to swim and get long hairs stuck in your mouth.
  9. Used band aids floating in the pool.  Gross.

This is my secondary pool.
  1. My last swim I encountered a random bandanna floating in the pool.
  2. Walker in a lane next to me was wearing her shoes in the pool that she wore around the fitness area.  Thanks for polluting the water I am swimming in.  They were NOT aqua socks, they were tennis shoes!  No enforcement of rules.
  3. Long hairs floating around again.  Nothing more gross than a mouth full of hairballs when gasping for air.
  4. Band aids on the pool deck, really?
  5. Hot tub was NOT hot.
  6. Pool is COLD.  I'm close to hypothermic after 3000 yards.
  7. The pool was not very clean.  Random stuff floating around in the bottom of the pool.

This pool is my backup.  I usually go here for a change of pace and I got a change all right...
  1. Pool was cleaner than the others than I have seen.
  2. Children under the age of 13 were in the pool, unattended.  It was like summer time at the pool.  They had beach towels, drinks, and a cooler by the pool.  Beach ball going back and forth over the lanes and in the hot tub.  It was chaos and not even a trainer giving a tour batted an eye.  I was the only adult for a 25 minute stretch so if something happened to the kids swimming, I was it.  Luckily I am CPR certified but I've never had to use it.
  3. Again, pool has rules posted but no one enforces them.  It would appear that simply posting rules and relegating responsibility to the attendees relieves the staff of any enforcement duties.  I notified the desk guy as I left and he was very shocked, but I do not know if he will act on the info.  The kids were leaving the pool when I left so he couldn't see it first hand.  I was very disappointed.
My question to you guys is have you experienced this at 24 Hour Fitness?  Is it like this at other pools?  I've been to a few other gym pools and have not been witness to this kind of stuff.  Am I the exception?

Kansas Bombs Against VCU

Rarely do I dedicate an entire post to Kansas Basketball, but after today's disappointment of #1 KU losing to #11 VCU, to keep everything in perspective, I must dedicate this post:

THE GOOD
  • After the loss, I wasn't compelled to watch post game interviews so I was able to catch the tale end of Karate Kid and the start of the Blues Brothers.
    • "Sweep the leg... you have a problem with that, Mr. Lawrence...?"
    • SCMODS - State, County, Municipal Offenders Data System...
    • I'm on a mission from God.
  • My weekends are now sports free until August when the Chiefs fire up.  I don't care about NBA, NHL or MLB.  Think of all that free time!
  • At least the 6 month old son was in a good mood and didn't care about the outcome!
  • I have a year to get a better KU tie than the obnoxious one I had to wear to work for next year's first round when KU has all the hope in the world that maybe, just maybe this year will be different.
  • Who cares about brackets!  Since I picked KU to win it all in all of my brackets (had too), and the rest of my final four was wiped out, don't have to sweat it out if I will win any money.
  • I don't have to have the conversation with my 3 year old daughter why we are watching Kansas Basketball instead of Micky Mouse Clubhouse.
  • The dogs can now be fed since in my obsession with the game today led to me spacing out feeding them this morning.
THE BAD
  • I now have to wait another 12 months to see how Kansas will find a way to disappoint.
    • Kansas is always in contention of winning 20+ games and the Big 12 every season... make no mistake, they are good, I don't take that for granted but it's hard (probably like for the players) to wade through the season and the Big 12 tourney to get to what matters, the NCAA tourney.  Final Fours and National Titles are the measuring stick for KU.
  • Is V the new B for KU basketball?
  • Aside from 2008, different players, different coaches, same results.  How did UCLA do their run back in the day?  Recruiting violations?
  • It doesn't get any easier to make a final four run through a 16, 8, 10 and 11 seed... squandered year and opportunity.
  • Will the Morris twins stay or go?  Probably both can get drafted but probably not to same team.  Will one more year together be worth waiting to go pro?  Lets face it, it's a money thing, not a Final Four thing.
  • Nick Wright, the only radio sports guy I can tolerate in KC, is going to discuss this at length tomorrow afternoon.  Good time to hang up the earphones or switch to 810 for a day.
  • It may be a while before I can wear my KU tri shirt and shorts to a race.
THE UGLY
  • Going to work is going to suck for a week.  At least my PM is a KU grad and won't want to hash it up every 10 minutes.
  • MU, K-State fans... even though they have ZERO combine final fours, will feel compelled to talk trash.  I didn't poke fun when K-State made their "we beat KU" video, or when KU swept MU for the season.  I support Kansas, I don't hate on other schools (ok maybe MU sometimes).
  • #1 KU loses to #11 VCU, and on 3/27/11 it's snowing.  Has hell frozen over?
  • North Carolina is still in it playing now.  We have UNC fans at work, I don't know if I can keep my mouth shut.  Still bitter about Roy even though Self won a title.  Self lead teams still under perform - Bucknell, Bradly, UNI, VCU.... shall I go on?

LA Marathon Reviews

I recently received some reviews for the LA Marathon.  Check out the totals HERE.

It's interesting to note how badly that was rated (granted I only have 5 reviews, but none were that great).  I've seen all kinds of twitter, facebook, blogs and online media pushing the LA marathon so I was expecting a huge positive fan sentiment... not so much.

I also have a couple reviews for the Groundhog Run here in Kansas City.

Again, if you would like to review a race, it only takes 5 minutes and just shoot me the event name and I will add it to the list.  If you see any improvements to be made, let me know as well!

TRAINING
Since my wife works a lot of weekends, I have been working towards getting long runs and rides in during the week.  That usually makes for an early morning but it works better than trying to juggle kids and working out, cause you can't do both and when R2 needs to hit the potty or Wee Man needs a bottle, treadmills and trainers be damned.  =)  Accomplished this week.  I had to use a lunch for the run but I'm tapering for a 1/2 marathon next weekend, so it was only an 8 miler.

I've seen a lot of posts about balancing life, work and training.  It's always a moving target!

This Week So Far:
Biking : 52 miles
Running : 12 miles
Swimming : 6000 yards
Total : 6.7 hours.
Hoping to get swim/bike/run in tomorrow.  Nice mini triathlon.  =)

KANSAS BASKETBALL
KU vs Richmond tonight at 6:30ish.  Hoping KU can get past a 12 seed, but UNI proved that even 9 seeds can give KU problems.  Golden road to final four?  I don't think so.  The other double digit seeds earned the right to play and beat some good teams.  Anything can happen but hoping for a nice double digit win for KU tonight.

Interval Tuesday... zzzzzzzzzzz

Man was it hard getting my rear out of bed.  I.... just..... could..... not.... get.... past the snooze button. My wife probably enjoyed it as well. NOT. Thanks to Em for putting up with me up at the crack of dawn and I'm sure waking her up every time. She's a good sport.

I probably sleep walked the first four sets of intervals I ran this morning.  BUT, they were OUTSIDE!  Hooray for Kansas warming up!  I'm trying to take advantage of training outdoors as much as possible and losing the dreadmill for the season.  =)  But I will say, with the treadmill you have more accurate control of your intervals whereas running outside you are going by perceived exertion unless you are watching your garmin speed the entire time.. without tripping or getting run over not watching traffic.

And the men's locker room.... some words are best left unsaid.  I would post some rules but I'm sure it would leave you all aghast at what happens in there and what some of us most be "exposed" to.

Monday, We Meet Again

It came, I conquered... sort of.

Got in 23 miles OUTSIDE!  I was hoping to do a short BRIK run, but time got me and I needed to get out the door for work.  But, it was unusually calm this morning.  No wind, hardly a breeze... don't get me wrong, I LOVED it as nothing jacks up my rides more than a strong wind that adds 20 minutes to a ride and make me late for the day.

But Kansas without wind is like snow without clouds, thunder with no rain, triathlon with no bike leg... it just does not make sense and is WAY TOO MUCH PRESSURE!  Ahh!

Ok, maybe not that extreme.  But ride in, Jayhawks in sweet 16, I'm #1 in all of my march madness brackets, Monday is good.  Lets keep it that way!

TRAINING
Last week:
Biking : 55 miles - wanted one more ride, oh well
Running : 20 miles
Swimming : 7000 yards - wanted one more swim, oh well

My bike averages are not where I want them.  I'm getting my miles in but I can tell my hill strength fizzled on the trainer this winter.  BUT, definitely getting outside when I can so hopefully it comes back.  Not going to press it.  =)

EXAMINER
Write on Steve in a Speedo's race report for the Christchurch Virtual 5k.  Next up Japan Virtual 5k?

KANSAS BASKETBALL
Back to the sweet 16 and the road to final four is through a 12, 11 or a 10 seed.  Can't get prettier than that and if they do make the final four, Pitt lost so they would not face another #1 in the semi-final.  Time to break out the obnoxious KU tie for work!

Race Reports / Reviews

In looking through the analytics on my blog, I found the posts with the highest views relate to race reports.  Hence a few posts asking for YOUR input into races.

If you remember, I had my little report for the 2011 Groundhog Run in Kansas City HERE.  I also posted a survey asking what you thought about it.

I got 4 responses and I put a little leg work into developing a scoring system and I have some up with a site for the results.

www.Triathlon-Reviews.blogspot.com

Check it out.  I think it's pretty helpful.  If you are wondering if to sign up for an event, you can check it out instead of going around to different sites or googling.

Here's what I need from the blogger land, more races and more reviews.

Consider dropping me a comment with your race (Year, Title, Location) and I will add it to the list and you can come back and review it.  The survey only takes 5 minutes and gives some insight to someone not familiar with the race or people that have done it wanting to know what other people thought.

So, bring on the events and reviews!

Thanks!

The Wind Sucks, and Blows

It's true, not just a perv statement.  I proved it on my ride this morning!

TRAINING
It was in the 60's this morning, so I pounded the pavement with the Trek!  27 miles and I was averaging 17 mph while fighting crosswinds... and then I had to hit the head wind to get home.  Ended with a 16.4 mph average.  I dropped that in 3 miles the wind was so strong.  Nothing worse than riding downhill struggling to keep 10 mph!

Not sure how the rest of training will shake out this week.  Need a long run, interval run, short bike and a swim.  Weekend is reserved for house duties I need to catch up on.

Sort of Stylish Blogger

Matt (http://turbeaucurbeau.wordpress.com/) on Falkee Triathlon tagged my with the blogger "chain letter/post" the other day, so I'll go with the blogger program.  =)

You are supposed to link back to the person who nominated you, and then nominate 7 other people.

Matt is at http://turbeaucurbeau.wordpress.com/

Nominations:
  1. Steve in a Speedo - http://iwannagetphysical.blogspot.com/ - You pretty much post everything, so I'm not sure if there is something more you can share?  By the way he is doing a sweet giveaway!
  2. Greta from Dupontathon - http://dupontathon.blogspot.com/ - she's one of the new athletes for Falkee Triathlon
  3. Scott Askins - http://oriondriver.blogspot.com/ - Another solid Falkee Triathlon athlete!
  4. Becky - http://beckystriblog.blogspot.com/ - She won my last giveaway and she needs to gush about how much she loves the gear.  =)
  5. Scotty Tri's - http://www.scottytris.com/ - local KC multisport blogger.
  6. CopyChic - http://triliterate.blogspot.com/
  7. Martin from FatSmoker2ironman - http://fatsmoker2ironman.wordpress.com/ - he lifted my bike conversation style posting so it's only fair.  ;)
You are also supposed to put 7 things about you.

1. I have 2 kids.  One daughter (R2) that is 3 going on 21 and a 6 month old boy (Wee Man).  They keep us hopping and there's never a dull moment at home, no matter how much Em and I want one!  =)

2. Just sent my tax stuff to my tax dude.  It got way too complicated when i got married and had kids to figure it out.  I don't like the black box of turbo tax or the McDonald's of taxes, HnR Block, so I use a private guy.

3. If you asked me my dream job, it would be something in Triathlon.  Not coaching or event organizer, but something in the industry.  Maybe a goal when I retire... in 30+ years... maybe...

4. We traded a good car for a SUV with bad gas mileage and then traded for a truck that got WORSE gas mileage.  $3.50 a gallon is killing me softly.

5. I tried out for football in college and didn't make it.  I can run forever, but I'm a lot slower than a college athlete.

6. I'm not a pro or even close to it, but I have a lot of opinions I share on Examiner, this blog and EMT.

7. Twitter, facebook, etc have opened up doors I never imagined... but there's only so many hours in the day and 45 to 50 are spent on the full time real job.  =)

There you have it.  Those that I listed, get blogging!

Another Week

Mondays just keep coming.  I think Monday should be classified with death and taxes as far as you can count on them no matter what.

TRAINING
Biking : 60 miles
Running : 18.5 miles
Swimming : 8000 yards

Got my pool swim in Saturday so that was nice.  It does create a bit of a hassle to drive to the pool and drive back home.  It adds 45 minutes to the workout just to get there.  There are pools closer, but not where I have a membership.  So, you have to do what you can.

Odd weather here in KC.  Snow today, 60's and 70's mid to the end of the week.  With gas going above $3.50 a gallon here, might look into trying to bike to work a few days.  Tis the season...

EXAMINER
Wrote my opinion about tri shorts vs bike shorts.  Used to be a bike shorts guy but this season I will be converting.

KANSAS BASKETBALL
They are the second #1 seed, which is good (I think they should have topped OSU, but whatever), but they are with Notre Dame which a lot of people had as a 1 seed.  Notre Dame is a 2 seed in KU's bracket and that's a tough bracket with Louisville and Purdue.  Seems like they should have had a easier bracket as the second 1 seed, but they only have to travel to OK and TX to get to the final four.

Not that I blindly think they will make the final four, but I'm just saying.

Now on to figuring out the bracket and figuring out the new NCAA money grab by adding more games Tuesday and Wednesday!

Gym Rats On Parade

Since I have been living in the gym in the AM the entire winter... I notice many things while sprinting my way to better fitness on the treadmills.

In addition to swim rules, I have noticed treadmill/aerobic machine etiquette gaffs.

Such as, older-not-really-in-shape-too-chatty guy on the treadmill strategically walking and "jogging" on the mill next to an attractive girl.  To his credit it's the same gal every morning, but she's running along minding her business and he'll start chatting her up.  I can't tell if she is just being nice or genuinely interested in talking to this guy.  As far as I can tell, they are gym acquaintances and nothing more.

THEN, he'll hit the elliptical next to the attractive girl... and chat her up.  The look on her face and body language is clearly, "dude, I'm busy".  Then, he hits the weights.

I don't know about you but I'm there for my workout, not social hour unless I see someone I know.  Maybe you gals think differently?

I must say, props to the girl that looked maybe 7 months prego power walking the treadmill!  I was sprinting intervals for 50 minutes and she was there before and after me.  You go girl.  Maybe she was trying to kick start labor.

Another pool rule - girls with long hair, PLEASE wear swim caps.  Catching long hair in my face while swimming laps isn't cool.  =)

TRAINING
Biking : 60 miles
Running : 9.5 miles - looking for a 9er tomorrow.
Swimming : 5000 yards - looking for another 3000 tomorrow.

I don't know how you early spring IM racers train indoors for 2 or more hours.  I did 1:45 for 35 miles and I was ready to be done at the end.  I can only imagine a 5 or 6 hours trainer ride... barf.

EXAMINER
By now you probably all have heard about Sally Meyerhoff being struck by a truck while riding her bicycle.  Sad stuff.  Be careful on the roads!

More On Swimming with Swim Meister Tony

Mark commented asking about the Masters Swimming deal.

So, I went to Swim Meister Tony for the answer!

Tony hit me back with:

USMS has a tool that is not only good for finding masters groups in your area, but also anywhere in the U.S. if you are traveling.

http://www.usms.org/placswim/

It's good advice to call first, as not all of the information is up to date. For example, the Blazers masters group, this list says the morning sessions are 6-7 am, and they have been 5:30-7 for a couple of years now. So, it isn't a completely accurate and comprehensive list, but it is definitely a good place to start.

=================================================
I'll follow up with my experience.

Winter of 2009/2010 I knew I needed to improve the swim and I didn't want to hire a coach to do it.  There is only so far reading tips on the net and asking friends can get you when you want to improve.

That's when Tony told me about KC Blazers.  At first glance of their web site, it's pretty intimidating thinking that you will be swimming with former college swimmers and people that live in the pool.  I was nervous but knew I needed to improve.  It was $5 a session so the price was right and they had 5:30am group swims.

So, I packed my swim jammers and headed to the pool.

First of all, the weekday option was not as packed as I thought it would be.  Ten lanes and maybe 15 to 18 people.  They group by speed (which I realized later) and the "coach" lists out your workout and you hit the pool.

Tip 1 - Make sure you swim with people maybe a little ahead of your skill set.  Don't pick too slow, you won't improve.  Don't pick too fast, you'll get frustrated.  Not sure which lane you need?  Ask the coach.  If they are worth the title of "coach", they will know where to put you.

Tip 2 - Some coaches spoon-feed the workout section by section.  Some just blurt it out and you have to ask when you get to the next set.  The good ones have a dry erase easel and write the workout on it so you can reference it.  If you have the courage, bring your own small whiteboard and write it down so you can go at your pace.  Some coaches like to monitor your group's performance, so keep that in mind.

Tip 3 - Ask questions.  Fellow swimmers and the coaches usually have no problem helping you out.  That's what the coach is there for... to teach you how to improve.  Swim stroke, hip rotation, body position - there are all points I was instructed on.

Tip 4 - You are not alone as the "lesser swimmer".  I would say 15 to 20% of the people there were triathletes.  Of those, 5% knew what they were doing and the rest were trying to keep and do their best.

Whatever you can get done, be happy with.  There should be motivation to swim fast to keep up with better swimmers and enough influence to teach you proper technique.

Heck... just sit there and watch the "pros" swim.  You would be surprised at what you can pick up.

What's it to ya?

QUESTION : What's your loftiest goal with triathlons and athletic endeavours?

ANSWER : Race IM Arizona
Qualify AND Race in IM Kona (aka IM World Championships)
Qualify AND Race in the Boston Marathon

Don't ask me when, maybe when I'm 40 or 70 but I'd like to get there eventually.

Enjoy.

Rules Rules Rules

This morning's swim brings about MORE RULES!

12.  You need to revise your swim stroke if you swing so wide you smack the guy in the lane next to you when you swim by, over the divider buoy.  You're swinging your arms too wide and losing economy in your stroke, not to mention injuring other people!

13.  I don't know what to tell you about someone that is "swim hopping" from one foot to the other in the center of the lane in one end of the pool and won't move to one side or the other.  Luckily I was in the pool after this gal left, but I saw through the window to the pool the whole shabang.  Really lady?  Lets all be considerate.  Pick a side.

It was interesting getting smacked by one guy and drowned by the guy in my lane nice enough to let me hop in.  He had an interesting technique of floating on his back while holding two kickboards kicking backwards and then would kick "normal" on the way back.  Created a nice wake.

I say the more people in the pool, the better!  Waves, flailing arms and hands!  BRING IT!  Best open water swim start practice you can get!  Adonis DNA!

If you have in your race report "my swim sucked" or "I was not happy with the swim time" and you log around 3000 or less yards a week in the pool, think tuna.  You need to be a fish.

The swim will not win you a race, but it can ruin your race.  I always focused on the bike, which I liked best.  Then, running which I liked better than swimming.  Last was swimming.  Couldn't take it.  Swimming mindless laps.  That was until last year.  I joined a masters swim group for the winter and got some good tips and workout routines.  My goal is 5000 yards or more a week.  Last year the KS IM swim that took 49 minutes in 2009 took me 36 minutes in 2010.  Same wetsuit, pretty similar conditions... lets ignore the flat tire in T1 and DNF'ing the race.  Point is, I gained economy and endurance by increasing swim yardage.

Makes sense, right?  Want to be better in the swim, swim more.

Monday 50/50

So got up and got going on the trainer to get my 25 miles in... pushed some intervals.  Then got R2 up and off to daycare and to work on time and then BAM... computer virus on my work computer.  Seriously... Didn't fire up the work laptop all weekend and as soon as I plug into our network and start er up, stupid "virus alert" virus takes over.  Flash forward an hour and IT had it fixed.  So got going good, but took some flak with the computer.  So far Monday is 50/50.  Hopefully this afternoon makes up for it.

TRAINING
Got some good volume in this weekend.  I was aiming for a 9 to 10 mile run Sunday and ended up with 12.  Guess I should have mapped my run or something first.  I tried a "new" route that was close to a more familiar route but added 2 more miles that I thought.  Oh well.

Starting to add more miles to workouts now.  IM KS is coming up and I have a 1/2 marathon April 2nd.  The season is upon us!

Here's my morning stats from the trainer ride.  Got some intervals in at miles 15 to 20 and then cool downed to 25.  I was pretty happy but ran out of blog catching up on the 0-10 mile start.  Need more reading material fellow tri bloggers!  =)  But, hopefully the weather is turning so I'll be riding outside and no trainer time requiring blogs to read to numb the pain.

I did have "issues" at mile 5.5.  Most everyone has experienced the GI running issue.  Though I was ok running later in the day but a park saved me.  Here's Active.com's advice.  I don't listen to them.  I've just accepted the fact and planned port-a-john stops on long runs.

EXAMINER
Posted my latest thoughts on swimming pool rules and for you Kansas Citians looking to run the Jackson County Tri or Du, here's some Q and A about the bike course.  Let me know if you have more questions about the events.

FAMILY
R2 turned 3.  Em turned our house into baking central for the two parties we were going to have for her.  Cupcakes EVERYWHERE!  How's an "athlete" suppose to stay in race shape with this kind of influence??

2 parties, several cupcakes and pizza slices later... I have come out on the other side none the worse for wear.

Howdy Howdy Howdy

How's your butt feel after this morning?

..... seriously, didn't we talk about that last week?

Fine.  Wasn't it nice to get an outside bike ride in this morning?  Is that better?

Better.  It was awesome!  High 40's and 23 miles of hard asphalt.

Too bad your average speed sucked!

HEY, give me some time to get used to being back on pavement instead of the trainer.

Hey guys, Road ID.

Woody, what are you doing on my blog what are you talking about?

Road ID - if you don't have one, GET ONE!  I don't want any rider left behind if he or she got hurt.  It's dark out there... you could crash or something.  People need to know who you are.

No problem.  Got mine.

On another note... another year, another big 12 title for KU basketball.  Nice.  Keep em coming.  Lets just avoid going out of the big dance in the 2nd game.  Seriously.

And while you're at it, please sweep the series with MU this weekend!

The Week Moves On

One new water heater later, the world moves on and it's Tuesday already.  Monday was just ducky as I felt like I was behind all day, started off the day with a cold shower and our water heater shot craps.  It was almost 10 years old so I guess it was time but what a pain.

TRAINING
Last week.
Biking : 58 miles
Running : 19.5 miles
Swimming : 4500 yards
Not the totals you spring IM people are putting up, but I'm not crazy enough to run a spring IM.  =)

I did get a notice from Leadville Trail 100 Mountain Bike Race lottery:

Dear Leadville Race Series Family,
We regret to inform you that we are unable to accept your application for the
2011 Leadville Trail 100 MTB race. In order to offer the nation’s highest quality athletic
experience with the utmost degree of safety, medical care, and racer support, we are
unable to accommodate every interested rider. We do not offer a waiting list, and are
unable to accept entries for 2012.

However, their are several alternative entry avenues. For the first time ever,
Leadville Race Series is introducing three qualifying races that will offer 100 spots each
into the Leadville Trail 100 MTB race. Check out the LT 100 MTB Qualifiers tab on
leadvilletrail100.com.

For the fourth year, the Leadville Trail 100 has partnered with Carmichael Training Systems
(CTS) to deliver coaching and training for our running and cycling events. Camp participants
will earn guaranteed entries into the race and the race entry fee is included in the camp fee.
CTS hosts five 2-day camps in July 2011 in preparation for the LT100 mountain bike race.
CTS will be holding an online lottery for spots in their LT100 camps and LT100 Ultimate
Coaching Packages, and you can register for their lottery starting March 1 through 10am MST
on March 10. Call CTS at 866-355-0645, or visit trainright.com/LT100 for details.

One final option is to be a Leadville Trail 100 Legacy Foundation Gold Sponsor. Your
race entry fee plus a $2000 donation to our local non-profit gives you entry to the race
and provides funding for Lake County High School scholarships and other beneficial
community events and groups. These limited Gold Sponsor spots are offered on a firstcome,
first-served basis. Please contact Shannon at sgipson@lifetimefitness.com beginning
Friday, March 18 to be a Gold Sponsor.

As an alternative, we encourage you to consider entering our Silver Rush 50 MTB in July.
You will get the same Leaville experience in a fabulous race at altitude through the historic
east side mining district. We also have the 12/24 Hours of Leadville race September 3-4.
This race features a beautiful course with a festival atmosphere. Put a team together or go
solo! More information about all our events is available at leadvilletrail100.com.

Lastly, we always need and welcome volunteers for any and all of our events. Not only is it
very rewarding to help other racers achieve their goals, but preference for the 2012 entry
process is granted to those who are able to help out!

We are grateful for your enthusiasm and dedication to the Leadville Race Series

At least they give us options, like WTC and contributing for foundation spots.... for $2000, are you kidding me? If I had the time and money for a training camp, it would be tempting.  Oh well.  There was probably little chance that I could have raced it had I got in but it's always fun to dream.  Maybe I'll pick up a KC 3 or 6 hour mountain bike race.

EXAMINER
Olathe Running Club is offering discounts for the Oz Marathon here in KC and the KC Track Club introduced a new race series rounding up several 5k's to wrap up in one package.  Also, some FELT road bikes have been RECALLED!  Check to see if yours is on the list.
