What vacation?

So with the wife working 3 of the 4 holiday weekend days, I was on kid patrol for 3 days I had off.  So, in reality I didn't get those days off.  So no training, nothing done around the house... other than dirty diapers, potty training, feedings, and food preparation.  I did get a break Sunday when some family watched them for a couple hours... but that only got me enough time to pay the bills.  Woo hoo!

TRAINING
Right now it's a squeeze to get it in.  With Emily working a lot of weekends, I have to get the long rides and runs during the week.  Week nights I mostly head home and help with kid duty, and lunch isn't enough time for a long workout, and that leaves the morning.  Add in some COLD temps lately and nothing but darkness, and it's a tough call.

Got in close to 7 hours last week.  I had to skip a medium run and do my threshold within my long run.  That went well and I actually felt a nice burn afterwards.

It's also rough moving indoor for trainer rides.  Hopefully this week will give me some lunches in the 50's for outside rides!

35 miles riding
13.35 miles running
4000 yards swimming
95 minutes weight lifting

Kind of off my goal but you take what you can get with a new baby!

FAMILY
Liam is doing good.  He has been at home for more than a week and we intend to keep it that way unless he gets worse.  He's not where we want him to be but he only needs meds and no mechanical intervention.  All I have to say is when you take anyone to the hospital, watch the staff like a hawk!  I have never experienced so many nurses and doctors bent on doing stuff you ask them not to do.  We got backed into a corner to do some stuff we did not want and it made him worse.  If you can, have someone stay with the patient at all times!

Looking forward to Christmas and Santa.  Although, Riah wasn't really all that excited to see him Friday if we go.  I told Emily that we should just take her gifts back if she doesn't really care.  =)

FANTASY FOOTBALL
Another 3-0 weekend!
I'm now 8-4, 6-6, 7-5.  I'm clinched in the playoffs in one league, fringe for the 6-6 and need to get one more win for the 7-5.

The key I have found is staying on top of free agents.  My drafted players have tanked for the most part and the randoms I have added here and there have carried me.  Peyton Hillis for your Browns peeps is the man!  Carrying me in two leagues.

I also use the yahoo player analysis to judge my starters.  I'd say 75% yahoo and 25% feel for deciding who to play.  Works so far!

Tis the season...

For people with bad attitudes.

Getting a run in last night around 9pm.  No biggie right?  Nice little 9 miler with some sprints worked in the middle.  Ran streets I run all the time, being observant of traffic and trying to stay out of the way of cars, etc.

Incident #1
Running down a curve on the left side of the road on the sidewalk, street ahead, car comes up and stops well short and makes eye contact.  Makes me think they are going to let me run by before they make their right hand turn.  I slow a little to enter and then they decide to gun it and make the turn.  Luckily I didn't trust them and slowed enough to go behind them.  Nice looking out guys...

Incident #2
Same road, on the sidewalk, running and minding my own business.  Decent amount of traffic and someone lays on their horn as they pass me, and I wasn't ready for that.  I was rattled.  I'm not sure what possessed that driver to do that.  I was on the sidewalk, well away from traffic, minding my own business.  Thanks, jerk.

Incident #3
Made a turn onto a more residential street, on sidewalk again.  I hear a car and see lights coming up.  I turned to look to see them slow down with the driver side window down.  So, I just stood there and watched to see what they would do.  They sped up and rolled up the window.  Thanks for going away and not doing something stupid.

Is this the leftovers of the black Friday shoppers?  Were they up so early that they had no courtesy or common sense left?  Did I have toilet paper sticking out of my pants??  WTF.

NEW NIGHT TIME RUNNING RULES (ok not new, but lets review)

1.  Tell someone where you are going and for how long, plan your route - check
2.  Bring a phone - check
3.  Dress for the weather - check
4.  Bring fluids if you will be out for more than 30 minutes - check
5.  Wear bright clothes with reflective strips if possible - sort of check - jacket was dark
6.  Keep your head on a swivel.  Always be aware of where you are and who's around you - after the honk, check
7.  Garmin - optional - check
8.  Run in familiar areas.  Night runs are not the time to explore new routes - check
9.  Bring a running light if possible - I don't have one so no dice for me
10.  Stay on the sidewalks when possible - check

Hopefully the Holiday spirit is upon us and the only road rage will be at the shopping mall parking lots from now on!

On the holiday note, tree is up, lights are on the house, bring on the Fat Man in the red suit!!
"Is that a real tree Clark?"
"yep, dug it out of the ground myself..."

The Regimen Review

Wanna get more fit?  Get off your butt and turn on your computer!

Sounds counter-intuitive, right?  Sure does but that's exactly what Katie Morse wants you to do!

About a month ago Katie Morse, founder of The Regimen along with Scott Allen, posted a tweet on twitter offering a month membership to The Regimen.

What is The Regimen, you ask?

At it's core is a series of workout videos developed from the perspective of a active triathlete.  Katie Morse has completed 2 Half Ironman races as well as running a marathon.  She is also certified as a personal enhancement specialist through the National Academy of Sports Medicine and continues to take classes from the National Academy of Sports Medicine.

The idea is workouts on demand, you can do the same one over and over or pick a different workout.  You have to accomplish 10 easy workouts to get to medium and 10 medium workouts to get to the hard workouts.  Once you get there, you can do any of them at any time.

What's different than other online workouts is there is a point system set up to earn rewards - gear or access to other videos.  That's on big difference from other workout programs I've seen.  Most you have to pay additional money more to get their gear.  At least with The Regimen you have an added incentive to keep up with the workouts.

BRASS TACKS
Ok, how were the workouts you ask?
Just to qualify myself, I've run marathons, half ironmans, 10k's, etc.  I put my time in for training so I would like to think I'm a good judge if a workout is bogus or not.  If you don't think so, I don't want to hear about it.  ;0)

The first easy program I did was pretty straight forward.  Katie does work in stretching type of moves that made me even more aware I'm not as limber as I should be.  There was one rock on the floor on your back to your feet move that I sadly lamed out.  So it wasn't plyometrics class in college, but it wasn't a cake walk.  It's as easy or hard as you want to make it.  I have a weight vest that I could have used and that would have added to the impact.  It reminded me of a "class" I did last winter twice a week for maybe 2 months.  A local running group organized it and it was geared for core work and I paid $80.  While it was beneficial, it wasn't the challenge I was looking for when I plunked down the cash.  With the Exert package you can get in 30 workouts for $50.  The math speaks for itself and I wouldn't have had to drag my rear end out of bed at 5am and into the cold two days a week.  AND if I missed a day, I could do the workout the next day!

It's also convenient with a family.  If you have 30 to 45 minutes and the internet, you can get a quick workout in.  That's a big deal with a 2 year old and a 7 week old!  Not to mention, the 2 year actually joined in for 3/4 of one workout.  If she's captured by it, it must be a winner, right!?

Here's the link to frequently asked questions.  It explains some of the videos and how the membership and points system works.

You're membership is a monthly fee and you get a specific amount of videos.  So if you view your allotment of videos before the month is up, you either pay more or cash in points.

For my in person class I was getting 16 classes for $80 in two months - $5 per class.  If I had a two month Exert membership I could get 60 classes for $100 - $1.67 per class.  The burn was the same or better for The Regimen classes.  You get what you put into it and I have a weight vest I could have added for more pain and suffering.

Overall I thought it was a good program (made me sweat) and definitely seems to have value as the cost per class is priced to win out over other types of in person classes I have access to around here in Kansas City.

Katie has graciously offered my readers a free month of the "active" package which is 4 workouts in a month.  Email Katie at katie@the-regimen.com and mention "I read Ryan's Review from his blog, I Tri Because I Can, and I'm interested in a free trial!"

Rolling into the Holidays!

So does everyone notice the earlier and earlier start of Christmas?  Halloween is an afterthought these days.  September marked the appearance of Christmas decorations at my local Target store.  2 weeks ago people on my street started putting up lights... and turning them on at night.  Thanksgiving hasn't even happened yet!?  Wow.  I sort of gave in.  Trying to get the lights up before we head for a cold spell, I started last night.  Half done.  Half baked... however you want to look at it.

I did head out for a sale at Toys R Us that was across the street from one of our large malls.  The traffic was insane.  Here's a phone that doesn't do it justice.  Traffic was backed up 2 miles onto the highway for the exit to the mall.  Ridiculous.  I stay online for my shopping.

TRAINING
Got in 7 hours last week.  Only got in one swim which isn't my plan.  I still would like 2 to 3 swims a week.  As usual, matters on the home front rendered me out of commission to swim over lunch.  More on that later.

And... trainer season is in full effect.  It is encouraging that my speed is up from last year.  Of course, I have been able to stay outside longer this year so I'm sure that helps with cycling legs.  Hoping to get out over a lunch this week before we hit below 20 at night around these parts.

I'm still shooting for 3 runs a week.  Short - fast tempo, medium with threshold sprints and a long slow/medium tempo run.  So far so good.  Pace is still up but the cold morning temps dip into my energy stores and take a little out of me.

Liam... oh Liam.  Back in the hospital AGAIN last Friday through Sunday.  It's hard to get a life again or have anything resembling a schedule with Liam having his issues.  We took him in for one thing and they kept him for another, making him worse.  We got him to a point they would let us go and unless it's an emergency, we are not going back.  Hospitals are good and all, but sometimes they do more harm than good.

FANTASY FOOTBALL
Peyton Manning showed up!  Thanks to the Patriots for pasting 21 on the Colts early to make them stop running.

I went 3-0 for the weekend for all of my leagues and two I'm sitting good for the playoffs.  One of my yahoo leagues I'm going to need to keep winning and I'll need some help to make the playoffs.  At least it pays for high score for the week that I have won a few times, almost covering entry fee.

Stay tuned for a review of The-Regimen!

Thanksgiving Thoughts from a Triathlete

Sometimes I'm disappointed with myself.

Most triathletes are age groupers with full time jobs other than training and racing. We are constantly under the gun to work a full week or more, get our training in and handle all of our other responsibilities in life.
Just the other day, I was driving downtown thinking about when to get my next ride in, how can I take advantage of this great November weather, what are we going to get my 2 month old son for Christmas, bills, what to get my mother for Christmas, when will I find time to send out Christmas cards, what's my budget going to be for triathlon gear next year, how's my bonus at my job going to treat me, will I be able to make the races I want to do in 2011, how can I work out the training and racing logistics with a full time job, wife and 2 kids, just to name a few things.

As all those thoughts were swirling in my head, I was waiting for a turn signal and I saw a bum on the corner with a sign asking for money.

I had been at this intersection dozens of times and seen many bums taking turns holding signs for change at that corner. Usually I just looked on or maybe squinted for a second to see what they wrote, but I never really gave much thought to actually giving them money, until last Saturday.

The reason for my trip downtown was to visit my 2 month old son who was checked in for his 6th hospital stint after complications from his second surgery. I had been so wrapped up in my own world of kids, family, hospitals, bills and triathlon world that I never really took notice.

Maybe it was because this time was the first time I was first at the light, close enough to hand him money that I really took notice.

I had been too busy in my own little world to stop and really be thankful for what I have in the midst of complications with our second child and personal economic challenges.

As triathletes, the majority of us are doing this sport as a personal challenge or a way to stay fit. We don't need to swim - bike - run on a Sunday to stay alive. Of course exercise is important to a healthy long life, but not to the extent we take it. We don't need to spend hundreds of dollars on gear and entry fees. We don't need to travel to different states to consume 140.6 miles. Even Bryan Payne from Training Payne Blog posted about the need to just love swimming, riding and running without the need for all the hoopla that comes with being a triathlete. We choose to do all of this, and there's nothing wrong with that. That is, unless you do not appreciate what you really have.

Instead of complaining about what training we missed, how our bike speed sucks or how we need a new bike, we should be counting our blessings and being thankful this holiday season.

- I am thankful for my wife. Not only does she put up with me and my ideas and training, but she has the education and experience in the medical field to be with our son as he tries to get better in the hospital and knows when to call BS on a doctor or nurse that doesn't know what they are doing.
- I am thankful for my 2 year old daughter. Her smile and goofy sense of humor make the bad days good days.
- I am thankful for my newborn son. Even though he has been sick a lot, I look forward to getting him home and watching him grow up.
- I am thankful for my mother and mother-in-law. We can always count on them to be there for support with our daughter when I have to be at work and my wife is in the hospital with our son.
- I am thankful to my employer. Instead of feeling underutilized and unappreciated, I feel grateful my company has the flexibility for me to take days off for child surgeries and long lunches to visit him.

Compared to the homeless men on the corner, life isn't that bad. We have a house, we have cars, we have our health so to speak, we have pets and I have bicycles that I don't need in order to survive. Should we Triathletes feel guilty? We should not. We don't need to quit what we love doing, sell our tri gear and give it to charity. But, we are in a unique position that most of us can give something. Spare some change, give your time, or help an organization. Do something. I had money in my pocket and the light turned green before I snapped out of myself absorption enough to give it to that homeless man.

We triathletes are a privileged group. Don't squander an opportunity to help someone less fortunate and pay it forward. I'm sure my son will provide me with the opportunity at that street corner again. I'll be ready, I hope you will too. Happy Thanksgiving.

HOLY EMBROCATION CREME BATMAN!

Dammit Jim, I'm a Triathlete, not a chemist!

So, went for a brisk morning run... and wanted to try my new embrocation creme to keep the legs and feet warm.  Ya, needed to plan that out better.  If you want to keep something warm, embrocation creme is where it's at.  But, better be prepared to deal with the after affects after you are done working out if it's less than two hours.  My feet and legs felt like someone was raking them and pointing a hair dryer on high at them from point blank range.  HOLY CRAP!  I spent 20 minutes trying wash as much off as possible in the shower (note to self - rubbing makes it A LOT WORSE!).  Then I was walking around with red fire legs in my boxers trying to get ready for work this morning.  I did not use that much to begin with, thank God!

You know that scene in Dumb and Dumber where they eat the red pepper?  That's what I felt like, but it was my legs and there was nothing I could do about it!

Some of you that have used this stuff may think, well ya, duh.  Never used it before.  I need to dilute it or something.  I didn't use that much at all and it was ENOUGH!  Thank goodness it was JUST legs and feet.  An hour being at work and it's finally manageable, almost pleasant.

1.  Less is more
2.  KEEP AWAY FROM DELICATE SKIN!  I was smart enough to keep it away from the crotchal region
3.  Cold water, soap, one time.. and then let it go away - you will suffer while you shower the rest of your body
4.  Don't use in places of friction - top of feet, ankles by sock line, etc
5.  Be prepared to suffer

Jason, thanks for the tip!  Now... I just need to plan on how to use this nuclear waste effectively as not to go to work with tears in my eyes.

Definitely made me not notice the 8 miles in the cold this morning.  Probably like the strategy of kicking someone in the shin to make them stop thinking about their headache...

Another Week, Another Hospital Stay

So my main man Liam went in yesterday for yet another surgery.  Basically same as before since the first surgery on his throat healed so well it didn't even look like he had the first one.  He came through with some swelling issues and we survived some not-so-great nursing to get him back home tonight.  Now we begin the decompression of the extra fluids they gave him for surgery to boost his pressures under sedation and makes him look like a Macy's T-day float!

TRAINING
I've moved indoors.  Bleh.  I'm not a trainer ride person.  But, seeing that I was manning the home front while Emily was manning the hospital, any workouts had to be at home on the trainer.  So spin away I did...  wooo hooo.  They only thing I can say was that I was surprised to see my averages.  I was at 18.5 mph Tuesday and 19.1 mph this morning.  Last year was a struggle to keep 18.  Of course I'm living without the Garmin so I had to scrounge up a bike computer from the garage.  It worked for the most part but I'm not sure if it was set up right for my wheel size.

OH, side note, the spoke with the magnet was LOOSE!  I've never witnessed that.  MAKE SURE YOU TIGHTEN YOUR SPOKES!  I hate to think I was out there on a loose spoke.  Break one of those and you are looking at some rim problems.

We shall see about getting some riding in this weekend when it's 66 degrees outside.  SaaaaaWeeet!

Pulled a couple wins out last weekend that I didn't think I would get.
Fred Jackson helped me out in both wins.  Peyton... did not help me.  He needs to pick it up.

Overall 16-14

Yahoo league 1 : 7-3 : I'm starting to pull away but they are close calls.  I have Phillip Rivers and he was on a bye last week but Hines Ward went down and some other randoms produced like 1 or 2 points.  Thank you Fred Jackson!

Yahoo league 2 : 4-6 : It's time to start flushing... Peyton manning is killing me.  My team performs well but I need 20 points, not 7.

CBS league : 5-5 : Still alive.  Won by two points last weekend.  Hines Ward hurt me here, too.  Not to mention Peyton Manning.

Got Garmin?

Raise your hand if you run with a Garmin GPS sports watch. (it's ok if you raised your hand reading on your computer, no one can see you)

Now raise your hand if you use a Garmin 301XT.
All you people that don't have your hands up, go out and get one!

Why do I bring this up?? I'm now without mine for some indeterminate amount of time. The back light flickers and won't stay on when I hit the buttons when it's dark out. So... sent it in to Garmin to have it checked out. I'm having withdrawal. I feel naked without it. Luckily I can borrow my wife's 205 and it will work in a pinch.

Why do I pimp the 310XT? I started out with the trusty Forerunner 201. It was a great entry level GPS and did what I needed, which was track running. As I got more into it, I needed more out of it. I needed better reception on cloudy days, easier access to download workouts, and bike riding GPS as I entered into triathlons.

Enter the Forerunner 305. It met my needs for a long time. That was until the face place just couldn't take the beating after 2 years and came off. I glued it back on and it worked just fine, but I was looking for a replacement.

[play angels from heaven music] Enter the 310XT!

Waterproof. It has the options I needed, quick release system that was easier to work with then the 205 and 305, ANT capabilities that I could track trainer rides with a cadence sensor, great reception and longer battery! DC Rainmaker has the in depth review if you need more reasons why you should own one! Luckily it was Christmas time last year and BAM! I was on the leading edge of GPS.

The beauty part was the ease of use. I don't use this sucker to it's full capabilities.

A. I'm not a super techie
B. I just don't have the time
C. I'm sort of a training minimalist

When I say I'm a training minimalists, by that I mean I don't train by heart rate, cadence, wattage, etc. I base my training on speed work, a good plan, and perceived rate of exertion. Maybe the 310XT is overkill, but I'm definitely jonesing to get mine back! I can transfer my workouts to myGarmin and prod around to see my pace and splits and I'm now without it! (probably could download with the wife's 205 but who has the time to get it synced, etc).

If you're looking for the perfect Holiday gift for the multisporter in your life, the 310XT is it!

Monday already? Where does the weekend go??

I know where the weekend went!  At home with the kiddos!  Emily is working weekends a lot these days which puts me on kiddo patrol all weekend.  I'm not toting the flag that I'm all that and a bag of chips for wrangling kids all weekend, since Emily does is most of the week while I'm at work, but it was a larger experiment to see how this would work.

TRAINING
I managed to get most of what I wanted in last week during the week.  I utilized a lot of my lunches for runs and rides.  It means less time taking it easy over lunch, but I guess you have to manage your priorities.

So, not much happened this weekend training wise.  I did a session of The-Regimen and played soccer Sunday night.  Most was captured during the week so basically it was two days of off days for the weekend.  It was hard not going bonkers and feeling lazy.  I'm sure my joints didn't mind.

I also find it interesting to read about everyone's "off-season".  I kind of took a departure from that line of thinking.  I've heard the saying it takes 3 weeks to build a habit and 3 days to break it.  Now, that probably doesn't apply in bad habits, but like getting up at 4:30am during the week... it doesn't take me long to get out of that.  I think if I changed my habits and took time off, it would be a tall order to get back on board.  Plus, I enjoy the training, just not the cold.

I do see it as a food "off-season".  Cakes, cookies, candy... with Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas it would be depressing to miss all the goodies.  I just take most in moderation and keep around 180 for the winter.  We'll see how that goes!

Like I mentioned, it was dad duty this weekend.  I think I did pretty good.  Even took BOTH kids to Wal Mart for food and stuff Saturday!!  I tried church last weekend and that was so-so.  But Liam slept and Riah was awesome!  Played in the cart building towers of boxes of food.  I have no idea how but the cart would suddenly jerk to the left and the tower would crash back into the cart... odd.  =)

I can't praise my daughter enough these days.  She was super awesome all weekend, only 2 little moments and super helpful with Liam.  Hopefully this keeps up and they have a good sibling relationship... you know, instead of the ones where they try and kill each other!

FANTASY FOOTBALL
Peyton Manning is killing me.  I have him in two leagues... only like 8 points.  Won one game and leading two but probably not after Monday night.  He's killing me.

REAL FOOTBALL
Chiefs are killing me too!  49-29 loss to the Donkeys (sorry about the slur to you CO peeps that like them).  Ever since watching Elway take them apart, I just don't like em.  But the Chiefs I think are showing what they really are for the year.  Better than 4-12 from last year, but that's just it, better.  They are on the brink of good but that's about it.  A lot of people were talking AFC champs and playoff home games and all kinds of non-sense.  Don't get me wrong, I'm a huge Chiefs fan but also a realist.  I'm happy with 8-8 or better after 5 sad years.  If they do better, great.  But by no means do I expect anything better this year.  They were 4-12, 2-14, and 4-12 before this.  You don't go from that to 14-2 and the super bowl.  Sorry.  "They were who we thought they were!"

And, for you Monday Funday people out there, some humor for the beginning of the week!  Something to look forward to with Liam!

Is it Friday yet?

This has been the longest week.  Maybe it's the kids getting up at all hours, maybe it's daylight savings time, maybe it's trying to fit a full week of training into 5 days... or maybe it's just a long week??

TRAINING
I actually got up to get 27 miles in on the bike this morning.  This could be the end of temps being acceptable (above 40) enough to ride during the morning.  I tried working some sprints on a road I know well so speeding in the dark wouldn't be as daunting.  It was a little depressed to see the average speed was sad and slow.  If I didn't know better, I'd say I have lost some speed, which sucks.  Maybe it's working out in the cold, maybe it's being tired.

It's always interesting to look at the Garmin mapping to look at the sprint sections.  You can see my one street I rode and the speed up for sprint and slow down for recovery back to the other end.

Little man is on soy milk now.  He seems to be doing better and hopefully the little ear infection and lung virus the Dr said he might have won't give him much trouble.  He can't win for losing.  At least we are another week without a hospital visit!  And, he's officially 1 month old.  Feels like he should be 21 which how much we have crammed in with him.

FANTASY FOOTBALL
For those of you keeping score, I'm 14-13 after 9 weeks.

YAHOO League 1 : 6-3 Had a good showing from C Bensen from the Bungels and got me a nice win.  San Diego's Rivers is on a bye so I'm stretching with starting Vince Young.  Throw the ball to Randy Moss early and often!

YAHOO League 2 : 4-5 I managed to eek out a win and stay first in my division with a losing record.  That's probably the only way I will make the playoffs... if my division keeps sucking!

CBS : 4-5  Not going good.  Another lousy week.  I need some running backs and Shonne Green has been a bust with the Jets!  C'mon man!

If there's enough interest, I might start up a Blogger / Twitter league for online bragging rights.  You can never play too much FFB!!!

Wednesday Hump Day

Some weeks just seem to grind and blend into all of the other weeks.  Non-sleeping kids on the home front also add to the GRIND part of that.

TRAINING
Getting it done.  I'm adding more speed work (threshold runs, swim sprints) to get faster during the non-race season.  I don't call it off-season because I realized 2 years ago if you have an "off-season" and just putz around and you want to have goals that surpass last year, you need to be running, swimming and biking year round.  I have an Examiner article below where I spoke on that a little bit.

I've been cramming lunch rides in to take advantage of the weather around here.  It's not too long before we'll be looking at 20's for the high so when it's 70's in mid-November, I'm out there when I can be!

The wife is also working this weekend so I can't really get any distance in this weekend to I'm trying to get it all in during the week and use the weekend for recovery.  I'll let you know how that goes.  =)

FAMILY
Liam is still hospital free.  He went in to the ENT and they think MAYBE he will need another surgery for his throat.  We are trying some different formulas and inhalers to avoid that, but at this point it would not surprise me.  That boy loves the hospital gig.

And now kiddo #1 is waking up non-stop at night.  She was up from 1am to 3am and I cover her while Mom covers Liam.  She used to sleep all night with no problem and now needs the door open and a hallway bathroom light on.  Anyone else have this problem?  Solutions?

Monk Pak Review

About a week ago, Monk Pak was added to the list of sponsors for Falkee Triathlon. In partnership with Monk Pak, they sent in two complimentary Monk Paks for review and use!

Dimensions: 4” x 3.5"
Color: Black
Fabric: 600 Denier Nylon

Upon initial inspection, you can’t help but notice the unique Monk logo on the front. It’s definitely professional, sharp, and attention grabbing.

When you open it up, you have two pockets, one large and one small. The strap is elastic with an adjustment clamp that you can fit onto almost anything. The strap will open so you can loop it on something and clamp it back down on say a backpack or handle. That’s convenient if you want to strap it to your bag at the gym or on your bike frame if you are in a hurry. I found it easily fit iPods, most phones (maybe not the larger smart phones), keys, gym membership card, credit cards or cash.

The adjustable strap allows it to fit on a variety of places. If you hit the treadmill and needs someplace to keep the iPod, the strap will fit over most treadmill arms pretty easily. Just tighten the strap and clamp it down and you are hands free. No need to wear it on your arm.

It does fit nicely on the arm, for which it’s mainly intended. I also discovered it fits 1 to 2 gel packs nicely for a long run if you don’t like to hold them or having them flopping in your pockets, possibly smacking you in places that don’t need to be smacked. I also run and ride over lunch and my work uses a badge system and it’s nice to be able to put the badge in and zip it in, knowing it’s secure and they’d charge me $50 if I lost the badge!

They run $9.99 for one and if you buy more than one at a time, the price goes down. You can’t argue with that! Most arm wallets/packs you see out there run you $20 without shipping. You won’t be able to mess with your playlist with the iPod in the pack, but most of us (well maybe you guys, I don’t usually run with headphones) set it on play and run, right? It’s pretty stable so slipping isn’t an issue.

I look forward to using it for tri’s next season to put my keys, USAT card and money in to keep it all in one place and secure in my transition bag. It’s always been a pet peeve of mine to have to search through the pockets to find where I stuffed everything pre-race after the race when I all I want to do is go home and hose off!

One main difference is the multiple pockets and they all have zippers with a flap that uses Velcro to secure it so it has a nice finished look. You don’t have to worry about anything falling out with zippers!

I for one hope they look into larger packs in the future.

I give it 4 out of 4 tire pumps. Plus, when the 2 year old daughter looks at it and says “oh that’s so cute”, you know you have a visual appeal!

FRRRRRRIIIIIIIDDDDDAAAAAAAAYYYYYYYYYY!!!!!!!!!

Always like a Friday, unless I have to work on the weekend.  =\

TRAINING
Having a 2 year old and an infant make it difficult to balance training.  Just ask my wife.  Many o discussions about how to work it out.  I'm utilizing my lunches more because
1.  Work schedule isn't CRAMMED so I can come in earlier and get it on over lunch
2.  It's getting too cold to try and ride a bike outside without sunlight
3.  It's way too hard to get out of bed to work out in the AM.
Maybe when daylight savings hits I can get some sunlight going and get moving.

Trying to get some speed work in the pool to add to my endurance developed over this season.  It's not very comfortable but you know what they say, you can't get faster unless you train faster.

FANTASY FOOTBALL
I don't know what happened but one league I only scored 22 points before MNF.  Peyton Manning got me 21+ but that wasn't enough to catch the guys I played as he only scored 48 points.  LAME.

Yahoo League 1 : I'm 3-5, sad record but first place in my division!  One division with 4 teams all at 3-5.  How lucky is that!?  Just traded for Randy Moss so hopefully he likes the lunch at the Titans place!

Yahoo League 2 : I'm 5-3.  By far the best performance and I need to keep it up.

CBS League :  I'm 4-4.  I was looking good at 4-2 but I'm slipping.  Joseph Addia is killing me sitting on the bench with his neck injury.  Tough it out and get out there!  =)

WEEKEND
Celebrating 3 years with the wife!  To think, 3 years and we are both still sane and we are keeping our kids alive!  Would have never thunk it.  Anniversary is later but she is working that weekend so we are celebrating now.  Dumping the kids off and doing something without them.  HOLY COW!  I don't think we have spent any time with each other since Liam was born about 8 weeks ago!  Should be fun.

CHARITY / CHALLENGE
A while back I introduced the CHALLENGE.  The end of October has come and gone and I need to go back and see where it sits.  It's not earth shattering but should be a decent donation to someone's cause.  Since it didn't reach the levels that would make it worth my time to divide it up, I'm going to draw a charity at random and donate the percentage of what I earned.  Stay tuned for the results.

Have a good weekend!

Shawnee Mission Park & Lack of Sunlight Issue

What's up with that... 6:45pm and LIGHTS OUT!  It doesn't help that I got to the park at 6pm due to traffic.  47 minutes and 5.23 miles later is was PITCH BLACK.  At least I got some mountain biking in.  I think that makes like 4 times this year.  =)

I did notice I've neglected my poor mtn bike.
Bike - "why is this @ss sitting on me?"
Me - "ok bike, I know I haven't ridden you for 5 months, haven't tuned you up this year, haven't cleaned you this year, parked you in the garage while the road bikes get to stay in the basement on nice racks (that's what he said), and basically neglected you, BUT I'm going to air up your tires, expect them to hold and ride the crap out of you and rocky trails and expect you to work just fine."
Bike - "ok, get on."
Me - "Good boy."

Good thing I brought the helmet light.  I must admit I'm rusty and had to un-clip more than I wanted but I'm not looking to break anything so it's all good.

Here's to getting in what you can out there before daylight savings and this weekend takes care of ANY sunlight after work hours!

By the way, for some reason there are random torso model stands and a dress hanging out in the hallway at work.  We don't do fashion, what gives?

Feed a Cold, Starve the Flu?

So, I've been under the weather since Friday.  Kiddo #1 picked up something from the petri dish, I mean daycare and shared.  It happens.

So I've got sniffles, snot, cough and my voice cracks like I'm 14 again.  So I'm going to head home, hide under the covers, take some cold medicine and sleep it off...

YA RIGHT.

Forget that.  Swim/lift over lunch and looking for some mountain biking and trail running after work!  YA BABY!  Sounds smart to me.

Monday Funday

While I'm at work, it's hard to resist the spoils of a night out with the kiddos pilfering candy!  My wife sorted out the candy "we didn't like as much" and put it into a Wal Mart bag for me to take to work and put by the coffee pot to get rid of.  Problem is, I keep going by it to the copier and a bag of skittles will just jump into my pocket and into my mouth at my desk.  I just can't stop... darn sweet tooth!

I try and keep sweets out of my desk and away from me at home so I'm not too worried about the Halloween candy.  It's just so good when it hit yours lips...

TRAINING
Managed 8 hours.  Miles total wasn't impressive but like I said, it's not about miles right now.  I did get a Regimen workout in Saturday while Emily was at work.  It's a good program as it showed my weakness... I'm not limber or as flexible as I should be.  I look forward to trying more sessions and writing up a review.  Riah likes it as well as it mirrors some yoga poses she does at daycare.  We "worked out" together.  Good stuff.  And holy frozen monkey feet it was a cold ride Sunday.  I don't know what's worse, trainer rides or freezing to death on the road.  Chris had a comment for some products to keep you warm that I need to look into.  Need to stay with the program getting morning workouts in!

EXAMINER ARTICLES
Last week I posted a little survey about wearing sunglasses.  Thanks to those that sent their opinion in.  Looks like most of you/us see the importance of wearing shades while being outside.  I know I didn't see the importance until a few years ago my eye dr said "looks like you have some sun spots on your cornea".  Makes you stop and take notice.

FAMILY / HOME
HALLOWEEN!  We headed out, did some family stuff and by the time we got out going house to house it was a little cold and windy, and 7pm.  Bedtime for the 2 year old is 8... she got tired quick.  At first she was painfully shy.  3 houses in it was "can we get more candy!?"  10 houses in it was "more candy!"  After 45 minutes she was asking to go home.  =)  I think we made out pretty good since we had our candy we bought (and were not home to hand out), and candy from the family and trick-or-treat candy.

I'll leave you with the scariest costume ever... Liam the skeleton.
